ROSWELL HISTORIC PRESERVATION WEEK

Designating May 11-17, 1997, as

"Historic Preservation Week"

Whereas historic preservation is an effective tool for managing growth, revitalizing neighborhoods, fostering local pride, and maintaining community character while enhancing livability and quality of life;

Whereas historic preservation is relevant for communities across the nation, both urban and rural, and particularly for Roswell, site of the Roswell Historic District, and for Americans of all ages, all walks of life, all ethnic backgrounds, and particularly the citizens of Roswell who preserve and support the Roswell Historic District as an asset for our city, state, and nation;

Whereas it is important to celebrate the role of history in our lives and the contributions made by dedicated individuals such as the individuals on the Historic Preservation Committee of the Historical Society for Southeast New Mexico in helping to preserve the tangible aspects of the heritage that has shaped us as a people;

Whereas "Preservation Begins at Home" is the theme for National Preservation Week 1997, cosponsored by the Historic Preservation Committee of the Historical Society for Southeast New Mexico, the Roswell Museum and Art Centre, the New Mexico Historic Preservation Division, and the National Trust for Historic Preservation;

Whereas the Historic Preservation Committee of the Historical Society for Southeast New Mexico has organized the observation of National Preservation Week in Roswell to encourage all people to learn about the many historic buildings which are a part of the history and heritage of our city, state, and nation, and particularly those buildings contained in the Roswell Historic District;

Whereas the Historic Preservation Committee of the Historical Society for Southeast New Mexico and the Roswell Museum and Art Centre have joined together to observe Historic Preservation Week by presenting a display of photographs by DD Cleveland of homes in the Roswell Historic District during the month of May and by sponsoring a presentation by Dr. Antonio Delgado on May 15, 1997, entitled "Historic Preservation and Community Building:"

Now, therefore, I, Thomas E. Jennings, Mayor of the City of Roswell, do hereby proclaim that May 11-17, 1997, is designated as "Historic Preservation Week," in Roswell and call upon all the people of Roswell to join their fellow citizens across the United States in recognizing and participating in this special observance.
