Designating May 11-17, 1997, as
"Historic Preservation Week"
Whereas
historic preservation is an effective tool for managing growth, revitalizing
neighborhoods, fostering local pride, and maintaining community character while enhancing
livability and quality of life;
Whereas
historic preservation is relevant for communities across the nation, both urban and rural,
and particularly for Roswell, site of the Roswell Historic District, and for Americans of
all ages, all walks of life, all ethnic backgrounds, and particularly the citizens of
Roswell who preserve and support the Roswell Historic District as an asset for our city,
state, and nation;
Whereas it is
important to celebrate the role of history in our lives and the contributions made by
dedicated individuals such as the individuals on the Historic Preservation Committee of
the Historical Society for Southeast New Mexico in helping to preserve the tangible
aspects of the heritage that has shaped us as a people;
Whereas
"Preservation Begins at Home" is the theme for National Preservation Week 1997,
cosponsored by the Historic Preservation Committee of the Historical Society for Southeast
New Mexico, the Roswell Museum and Art Centre, the New Mexico Historic Preservation
Division, and the National Trust for Historic Preservation;
Whereas the
Historic Preservation Committee of the Historical Society for Southeast New Mexico has
organized the observation of National Preservation Week in Roswell to encourage all people
to learn about the many historic buildings which are a part of the history and heritage of
our city, state, and nation, and particularly those buildings contained in the Roswell
Historic District;
Whereas the
Historic Preservation Committee of the Historical Society for Southeast New Mexico and the
Roswell Museum and Art Centre have joined together to observe Historic Preservation Week
by presenting a display of photographs by DD Cleveland of homes in the Roswell Historic
District during the month of May and by sponsoring a presentation by Dr. Antonio Delgado
on May 15, 1997, entitled "Historic Preservation and Community Building:"
Now,
therefore, I, Thomas E. Jennings, Mayor of the City of Roswell, do hereby proclaim that
May 11-17, 1997, is designated as "Historic Preservation Week," in
Roswell and call upon all the people of Roswell to join their fellow citizens across the
United States in recognizing and participating in this special observance.
