As we think about Y2K and its possible effects, it is interesting to note that the first modern bank in the United States, the Bank of North America, received its charter from the Confederation Congress on December 31, 1781.

Friday is not only a special New Year’s Eve, it is also Make Up Your Mind Day. If you have a hard time making up your mind, you are encouraged to make a decision and follow through with it!

WHAT'S HAPPENING?

Wednesday's 10:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. storytimes feature New Year’s customs and crafts from around the world. The library will be closed on December 31 and January 1, so there will be no Saturday morning storytime this week.

BOOK TALK

Librarian Lorena Blanco provides this week's library information. "Here’s to the bright New Year, And a fond farewell to the Old; Here’s to the things that are yet to come, And to the memories we hold." Are you looking for the perfect words to say as the clock strikes twelve this New Year’s Eve? Look no further than your Roswell Public Library for information that will help you convey your sentiments more eloquently.

Paul Dickinson’s "Toasts," which contains over 1,500 of the best toasts, sentiments, blessings, and graces, is sure to give you inspiration as the ball drops in Times Square. Easy to use, it contains funny and sentimental toasts, old-fashioned and contemporary toasts, and famous and infamous toasts. Can someone else say it better? You can find out by looking at books such as "The Quotable Spirit: A Treasury of the Religious and Spiritual Quotations from Ancient Times to the Twentieth Century" to borrow some inspiration.

If you want to start the New Year on a lighter note, look at the "Oxford Dictionary of Humorous Quotations," where you’ll find the perfect words to toast friends and family while keeping the mood light.

Words by everyone from Woody Allen to Martin Luther King, Jr., Mark Twain, and Emiliano Zapata can be found in "The Oxford Dictionary of Modern Quotations." Their words can help you express your sentiments to your loved ones and friends.

So come to the Roswell Public Library before the bell strikes midnight to gather the perfect words to say as we prepare to raise our glasses to the new Millennium.

DID YOU KNOW?

According to the Council of Better Business Bureaus, we should all beware of Y2K bank scams. Con artists call to offer "protection" for your bank accounts and then ask for account numbers. Only your bank can give your money Y2K protection, and legitimate representatives from your bank will already know those numbers. The same holds true for credit cards. If anyone calls offering to make sure your assets are protected from Y2K computer problems, find out whom he/she claims to represent. If in doubt, call back the institution - using the phone number you already have, not theone the caller gives you.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK:

Here is a toast to you from the entire staff of your Roswell Public Library: "May the road rise to meet you, May the wind always be at your back, The sun shine warm upon your face, The rain fall soft upon your fields, And may God hold you in the hollow of His hand, Until we meet again." Happy New Year!
