Today is the anniversary of the First Crossword Puzzle, which was compiled by Arthur Wynne and published in a Sunday supplement to the "New York World" on December 21, 1913. Today is also Humbug Day, which allows all of those caught up in Christmas preparations the opportunity to say 12 "humbugs" during the day.

Wednesday marks the Winter Solstice, which is the official beginning of winter in the Northern Hemisphere. Daylight length is a minimum for the year, ranging from 12 hours, 8 minutes, at the equator to zero at the Arctic Circle.

Saturday is Christmas, and Sunday is National Whiner's Day, dedicated to those who return Christmas gifts. People are encouraged to be happy about what they do have rather than unhappy about what they don't have!

WHAT'S HAPPENING?

Christmas is celebrated with in stories and crafts at Wednesday's 10:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. storytimes. The library will be closed on December 24 and 25 for the holiday, so there will be no Saturday morning storytime this week.

BOOK TALK

The library's Rosie Klopfer provides this week's book information. Holiday time is for friendship, families, and the perfumed smells of cloves, ginger, and allspice coming from the kitchen. A fire in the fireplace, some hot chocolate, a little snow on the grass, a pair of slippers, and a good book or board game would make it perfect. Here are some of the library's Christmas books to help make your holiday time special!

"Bright Star Shining: Poems for Christmas" is a book for young readers with colorful watercolor drawings on each page. "A Christmas Feast," compiled by Edna Barth, is a collection of poems, sayings, greetings, and wishes by several authors spanning several centuries. "Christmas in the Stable" contains poems selected and illustrated by Beverly Duncan. Each poem is from the point of view of an animal in the stable on that historic night.

Bobbie Kalman's "Christmas Long Ago From A to Z," an alphabet book of Christmas in the nineteenth century, is a delightful picture book with an old-fashioned flare. "My Very Own Christmas: A Book of Cooking and Crafts," by Robin West, contains menus based on themes and various crafts for different levels of creativity.

"The Christmas Eve Cookbook: With Tales of Nochebuena and Chanukah," written by Ferdie and Luisita Pacheco, has 200 recipes and 19 holiday stories. "Camille Glenn's Old-Fashioned Christmas Cookbook" contains recipes for tree-trimming parties, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, and fireside picnics.

If you have children, you'll want to check out "Holiday Storybook Stew: Cooking Through the Year With Books Kids Love." Written by Suzanne Barchers and Peter Rauen, this book combines three favorite pastimes: reading, related activities, and cooking - all inspired by the holidays. Joan Nathan's "The Children's Jewish Holiday Kitchen" explains Jewish traditions with 70 ways to have fun with your children and make family celebrations special.

DID YOU KNOW?

The holidays are full of photo opportunities, so here are a few tips from children's photographer Kate Burton for taking better photos of kids.

First, use a film speed of at least 200 or 400 ASA so that you do not depend too much on a flash. Shoot by natural light whenever possible. Take pictures of kids in their usual environments and in a variety of moods. The photos will reflect their world more accurately, and the kids will be less self-conscious than if asked to pose in unfamiliar surroundings. Try to get photos of a child with a currently favorite object, such as a toy or a blanket. You might even try shooting an occasional roll of black-and-white film for photos with an elegant, timeless look.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK: The staff of the Roswell Public Library wishes you and yours a blessed and very Merry Christmas.
