Welcome to American Education Week, National Geography Awareness Week, and National Children's Book Week. Today is Homemade Bread Day, and Wednesday is Mickey Mouse's 70th birthday! Thursday is Have a Bad Day Day, and Saturday is World Hello Day (greet at least 10 people with a friendly smile and "hello.")

WHAT'S HAPPENING?

Wednesday's 10:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. "ABC" storytimes feature pop-ups, big books, and an alphabet craft. Saturday morning's 10:00 storytime features travel stories to fit the theme "Books Go Everywhere," and participants will make a trip journal.

BOOK TALK

Librarian Barbara Harris provides this week's book information. The Roswell Public Library can offer an escape from political pundits and holiday hype: we have recently acquired the Oxford University Press edition of the complete works of Mark Twain. Each volume contains the original text and illustrations of the books, an introduction by a contemporary author, and an afterword by a Twain scholar.

With lucid wit and precise language, Twain exposed every human foible of his time and ours. Having his complete works available enables us to share not only the chagrin of the good citizens of Hadleyburg and the rowdy good spirits of the California gold camps, but also the lot of the people of the European and American colonies and the privileged class of the Guilded Age. The problems he saw a hundred years ago still haunt us.

Check out an old favorite or a new discovery and find out how Mark Twain changed forever the way that we think about America and American literature.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK: "The world of books is the most remarkable creation of man. Nothing else that he builds ever lasts. Monuments fall; nations perish; civilizations grow old and die out; new races build others. But in the world of books are volumes that have seen this happen again and again and yet live on. Still young, still as fresh as the day they were written, still telling men's hearts of the hearts of men centuries dead." (Clarence Day)
