November is here, bringing with it Aviation History Month, International Creative Child and Adult Month, International Drum Month, National Hospice Month, and Peanut Butter Lovers' Month.

Today, of course, is General Election Day, so be sure to make your vote count by casting it! This is also Sandwich Day, the birth anniversary (1718) of John Montague, Fourth Earl of Sandwich. A rake and a gambler, he is said to have invented the sandwich as a timesaving nourishment while engaged in a 24-hour-long gambling session in 1762.

Friday is the Great American Warm-Up. Just as the weather outside begins to get frightful, this weekend is set aside to clean out those closets. Take your warm, wearable coats and jackets that you no longer use and donate them to your favorite charity for distribution to the needy. Friday is also the birth anniversary of Adolphe Sax, the inventor of the saxophone; John Philip Sousa, the March King; and Russian compose Peter Ilich Tchaikovsky.

Sunday is Abet and Aid Punsters Day, a day to laugh instead of groan at those incredibly dreadful puns. For instance, "Though he's not very humble, there's no police like Holmes."

WHAT'S HAPPENING?

Wednesday's 10:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. "Colors" storytimes feature pop-ups, feltboards, and a crayon colors craft. Saturday morning's 10:00 "Be A Scientist" program features tales of weird science and you-do-it experiments.

Saturday afternoon from 1:00 to 3:00, Gale Wright, Valerie Bennett, and Kathleen Sherman will instruct a Stamp Art Workshop for adults or parent/child twosomes. You'll learn how to decorate gift tags, cards, and bags with rubber stamping. All equipment and materials will be furnished. Attendance is limited to 50 people.

BOOK TALK

Librarian Mary Beth Wright provides this week's library information. "Idiots! . . . Dummies! . . . Idiots! . . . Dummies! . . ." This is not a name-calling contest between rival teams, but partial titles of quick and easy how-to books. These cleverly written books give brief, simple directions on various subjects from computers to skiing.

If you want an "idiot-proof" way to create and design a web page, read "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Creating an HTML Web Page" by Paul McFedries. With the skiing season just around the corner, you might want to study Claire Walter's, "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Skiing." This useful guide gives excellent tips for navigating the ski area.

Another series of how-to books for beginners are the "Dummies" books, written by well-known authors in their respective fields. For great desserts without much preparation time explained in plain English, try pastry chef's Bill Yosses's, "Desserts for Dummies." Another in this series is Dr. Joyce Browne's "Dating for Dummies." A popular radio talk show host, Browne provides a humorous, helpful manual for those with dating jitters.

If you need ready reference material that is easily read and easily followed, peruse the "Idiots" or "Dummies" books at your Roswell Public Library.

DID YOU KNOW?

As we approach the holiday season, here are a few pieces of money matters information found on the Internet. Talk about inflation, it costs more to buy a new car today in the United States than it cost Christopher Columbus to equip and undertake three voyages to and from the New World.

On the other hand, we should remember that One-fourth of the world's population lives on less than $200 a year, and 90 million people survive on less than $75 a year.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK: "Nothing in the known universe travels faster than a bad check." (Unknown)
