Welcome to National 5-A-Day Week, which encourages all Americans to increase the amount of
fruits and vegetables they eat to five servings per day to better their health and reduce
their risk of cancer. Today is Another Look Unlimited Day, so take another look at your
house, garage, barn, shed, attic, or yard and give those surplus items you find there to
charity.
Wednesday is Do It! Day (aka Fight Procrastination Day). If you are
organizationally challenged, today is your day. There are no excuses - just do it!
Thursday is Sew Be It! Day, which celebrates the anniversary of the patent of the sewing
machine in 1846. Friday is No News Is Good News Day. Sponsors say that if you don't read,
listen to, or watch the news on that day, you'll feel better that night!
WHAT'S HAPPENING?
Wednesday's 10:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. cat storytimes feature feltboard
stories, stick and shadow puppets, and a glitter cat craft. At Saturday morning's 10:00
storytime, participants can celebrate National Breakfast Month with stories and a make a
pancake boy craft!
September is National Library Card Sign-up Month. The Roswell Public
Library is encouraging people of all ages to join the many "card carrying" users
of the library by obtaining their own personal library card. New patrons will receive a
brochure listing the services and resources of the library and a free book bag. To
register you for a library card, the library needs proof of your identity and your current
mailing address. Parents need to sign for young people under the age of 15.
BOOK TALK
Cats are some people's dream pets and other people's nightmares! New
cat owners and experienced cat lovers alike often have questions about their pet's
behavior. Every cat has its own personality, complete with endearing or irritating habits.
Some will suddenly develop some truly eccentric or disturbing behavior that sends their
owners searching for help in dealing with this new problem.
The library is one place you can come for information and answers to
your questions. The following are some books about cat behavior and how to train your cat
to be a good natured, non-destructive pet from the library's collection: "Good
Owners, Great Cats," "My Cat Is Driving Me Crazy!" "Becoming Your
Cat's Best Friend," and "That's Cats!" For serious problems, you might want
to check out a book on cat psychology, such as "Hiss and Tell," "Cats Have
No Masters," or "A Cat Is Watching."
DID YOU KNOW?
If you have one of great grandma's precious handmade quilts, you'll be
interested in these hints from professional quilt restorer and preserver Inge Stocklin.
Quilts should be hung with care on quilt hangers or quilt rods. Never sew or nail them to
wood for wall display, and do not let quilts touch unsealed wood. The oil is harmful to
the material.
Washable quilts, which include most fabrics and trims except silk and
velvet, can be soaked in a washer overnight using liquid quilt soap (available in fabric
and craft stores), washed on the delicate cycle, and then laid flat on top of a sheet on
the floor until dry. Never line dry.
You can crisp crackers and pretzels by putting them in an uncovered
dish and microwaving until warm - approximately one to three minutes, then letting them
cool thoroughly. For an onion without tears, trim the ends off a large one, place it on a
paper towel, microwave on high for one minute, and remove the skin. To get more juice from
lemons, oranges, and grapefruits, cut them in half, then microwave on high for 30 to 60
seconds.
THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK: "Every one has a photographic memory. Some
just don't have film."
