Top o' the morning to you on this Happy St. Patrick's
Day! Thursday is Absolutely Incredible Kid Day. Camp Fire Boys and Girls encourages adults
to write a letter to the children they know to tell the children how special they are and
how much they mean to them.
Saturday is Flower Day, and everyone is encouraged to give or display
flowers or plants in their communities. Each state will honor the state flower at its
capital. Any one know New Mexico's state flower? The answer appears later in the column.
Sunday is As Young As You Feel Day, which encourages us to stop acting
our chronological ages and get out there and start feeling peppy! Fortunately, Sunday is
also International Goof-Off Day, a day of relaxation and a time to enjoy some good-humored
fun and some good-natured silliness!
WHAT'S HAPPENING?
It's "think pink" with stories about flamingos at
Wednesday's 10:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. storytimes. Participants will also make flying
flamingos. Take a trip to Egypt at Saturday's 10:00 a.m. storytime and make a pyramid and
a jeweled crocodile.
BOOK TALK
Children's Librarian Mary Stickford provides this week's book
information. Spring is in the air! Given the speed with which it passes in Roswell, you
better take full advantage of the season.
Among the many books in the Children's Area to help you celebrate
spring are "Batboy: An Inside Look at Spring Training," "Laughing Tomatoes
and Other Spring Poems" (which is in English and Spanish), "Spring Science
Projects," and a craft book by Thomson entitled "Spring."
There are also several titles helpful in planning activities for church
youth, including "Make Your Own Worship Bulletins for Spring and Summer,"
"Christian Celebrations for Spring and Summer: Ages 7-12," and "Christian
Parties for Spring and Summer."
Whether you want Haiku, suggestions for nature walks, science fun, or
other spring activities, your Roswell Public Library has something for you!
DID YOU KNOW?
We really need to give credit to the librarians around the world who
help us to find just what we're looking for - even if we don't know what we're looking
for! The following is a list of "butchered" book titles actually requested from
patrons and the book they really wanted. These are provided by real librarians from the
Fiction_L listserv.
The requested "Salad at a Bad Café" was actually "Ballad of the Sad
Café"; "Satanic Nurses" was "Satanic Verses"; "Too Short to
Live" by Mickey Rooney was "Life Is Too Short" by Mickey Rooney;
"Lesee Moon" by William Prarie was "PrairyErth" by William Least Heat
Moon; "I Left My Heart at Broken Arm" was "Bury My Heart at Wounded
Knee"; "Tequila Mockingbird" was "To Kill a Mockingbird";
"Women Who Dance with Wolves" was really "Women Who Run with the
Wolves" and "Dances with Wolves"; "The book about all those dead
cowboys by Dana Kubler Ross" turned out to be various westerns by Dana Fuller Ross;
and "Mice Are Gay" ended up as "My Sergei" by ice skating star
Ekaterina Gordeeva.
As promised, here's the answer to the state flower question. New
Mexico's state flower is the yucca!
THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK:
"Those who misbehave should remember that eventually they will get
what is coming to them. Time wounds all heels." (unknown)
