Welcome to Girl Scout Week and Autograph Collecting Week. To celebrate both, try to obtain the autograph of a famous Girl Scout! Today is the anniversary of the day in 1862 when the first paper money was issued in the United States. The denominations were $5 (Hamilton), $10 (Lincoln), and $20 (Liberty). They became legal tender a week later, March 17, 1862. Today is also the anniversary of the invention of the telephone (1876) and the beginning of the work of the Salvation Army in the United States (1880).
Wednesday is Johnny Appleseed Day, which celebrates the life of John Chapman (1774-1845), planter of orchards and friend of wild animals. Friday is the anniversary of the day in 1887 when Chester Greenwood of Maine received a patent for earmuffs.
Saturday is Save A Spider Day. Sponsors say, "Don't begrudge a busy, useful spider its web; don't stomp or vacuum those little octopedal arachnids! If you have to, gently move your spiders to a safer place." Finally, Sunday, March 15, beware the Ides of March by celebrating National Brutus Day. You may find that as much intrigue, plotting, and back-stabbing occurs today as was found in ancient Rome!

WHAT'S HAPPENING?
Wednesday's 10:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. and Saturday's 10:00 a.m. storytimes will all celebrate St. Patrick's Day with feltboards, cut-and-tell stories, finger plays, and movement activities ("Irish Potato Hop"). Lucky participants will make St. Patrick's decorations including door hangers, pots of gold, and shamrock crowns!

BOOK TALK
Librarian Loretta Clark provides this week's book information. In the Reference collection of the Roswell Public Library are several catalogs of free materials that will benefit home school and public school educators, as well as people in general. These catalogs are full of organizations and businesses that offer materials free or at a low cost. Since these catalogs must be used in the Library, plan a time when you will not have to rush through the bargains.
Some of the best catalogs include "Educators Guide to Free Films, Filmstrips, and Slides 1997"; "Educators Guide to Free Videotapes 1997"; "Educators Guide to Free Health, Physical Education, and Recreation Materials 1997"; "Educators Guide to Free Guidance Materials 1997"; "Educators Guide for Free Home Economics and Consumer Education Materials 1997"; "Educators Guide to Free Science Materials 1997"; "Educators Guide to Free Social Studies Materials 1997"; "Educators Index to Free Materials 1997"; "Elementary Teachers Guide to Free Curriculum Materials 1997"; and "Guide to Free Computer Materials 1997."
Although "All the Best Contests for Kids" does not offer free materials, it does offer some fun contests that parents and kids could find both creative and productive. This book may be checked out of the Children's collection.

DID YOU KNOW?
Here is some "Trivia for the Completely Bored" taken from the Internet. For instance, since it's the anniversary of paper money, did you know that all 50 states are listed across the top of the Lincoln Memorial on the back of the $5 bill? And which state is the only one whose name is just one syllable: Maine. On an American one-dollar bill, there is an owl in the upper left-hand corner of the "1" encased in the "shield" and a spider hidden in the front upper right-hand corner. It's not paper money, but just so you'll know in case any one ever asks, a dime has 118 ridges around the edge.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK:
"While money isn't everything, it does help you to find that out in comfort." (unknown)
