Welcome to February, which is American Heart Month,
American History Month, An Affair to Remember Month (make your romance sizzle by having an
affair with your mate), Black History Month, Creative Romance Month, International
Embroidery Month, National Cherry Month, National Sign Up For Summer Camp Month, National
Wild Bird Feeding Month, Worldwide Innovation Month, and Plant the Seeds of Greatness
Month.
One hundred years ago, Travelers Insurance Company issued
the first car insurance - against accidents with horses! Today is also the anniversary of
the ratification of the 16th Amendment in 1913, which granted Congress authority to levy
taxes on income. Church bells did not ring throughout the land, and no dancing in the
streets was reported!
Today is also Laugh and Grow Rich Day, which recognizes
laughter's power to add to the bottom line. People are more effective and tend to remember
things better when they laugh, and laughter helps to lower employee turnover rate.
Thursday is Weatherperson's Day, which commemorates the 1744 birth of one of America's
first weathermen, John Jeffries, a physician who kept detailed records of weather
conditions.
Friday is Pay-A-Compliment Day. Go ahead, make someone (and
yourself) feel a little happier today by practicing this simple act of kindness. Pay a
compliment to co-workers, family members, or strangers on the street or in the elevator at
your office building!
Saturday is the anniversary of the day in 1827 when Ballet
was first performed in the US. A minor scandal erupted when the ladies in the lower boxes
left the theatre upon viewing the light and scanty attire of the ballerina and her troupe.
WHAT'S HAPPENING?
We'll observe Children's Dental Health Month with Big Tooth
storytime at Wednesday's 10:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. storytimes. Saturday morning's 10:00
storytime features pet pigeons from Danny Zamora's award-winning flock. Participants will
observe fancy pigeons, learn about raising pigeons, and make a pecking pigeon toy!
Next month, the Friends of the Library's Books on Wheels
program will begin its third year, and they're looking for interested volunteers and
participants! If you would like to help deliver books to people who are not able to get to
the library or if you know of someone who is temporarily or permanently unable to get to
the library, please contact the library! This is a wonderful service provided by the
Friends, and the volunteer delivery people receive as much as they give!
BOOK TALK
Here's the conclusion of Library Director Betty Long's
information on packing and storing books.
Storage: It is essential that storage conditions are dry. The most common causes of damage
to stored books (i.e., mold and insects) are directly attributable to damp storage
conditions. Moisture will cause mold spores to germinate and "bloom" and
encourage insect eggs to hatch. If storage conditions (including the boxes and books) are
quite dry, both mold spores and insect eggs will remain dormant and do no harm.
Boxes should not be placed directly on the floor. They
should be raised by a few inches on pallets or blocks to aid air circulation and as a
precaution in case of flooding. Nor should they be stacked against exterior walls as
moisture is likely to be absorbed and transferred from outside.
Stored material should not be subject to extremes in
temperature. A room inside the house is preferable to an attic, garage, or basement. A
dry, clean storage environment and tightly sealed boxes are the most effective means of
preventing insect infestation and damage.
THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK: "If everything is coming your way, then
you're probably in the wrong lane." (unknown)
