You have a wonderful opportunity this week to make other people feel great! This is Tell Someone They’re Doing A Good Job Week, so give someone that message every day of this week. You’ll feel great, too!

Today is the anniversary of the Boston Tea Party in 1773, when the contents of nearly 350 chests of tea were dumped into Boston harbor. Today is also the birth anniversary of Beethoven (1770-1827); Barbie and Barney Backlash Day; and the meeting of the Man Will Never Fly Society, which is held annually on the night before the anniversary of the Wright Brothers’ first flight.

Sunday is Forefathers’ Day, which commemorates the landing at Plymouth Rock on December 21, 1620. If you’re already worn out by the holiday crush, you can vent your frustrations by celebrating Humbug Day on Sunday. Each person is allowed no more than 12 humbugs!

WHAT’S HAPPENING?

Wednesday’s 10:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. take us back to basics with opposites in books and activities. Saturday morning’s 10:00 storytime features gingerbread fun.

BOOK TALK

Librarian Barbara Harris provides this week’s information. Jazz fans from experts to those who just "know what they like" will find a variety of resources to enjoy at the library. They can check out cassettes and compact discs of classic jazz artists like Billie Holliday and Benny Goodman and contemporary performers like Dave Brubeck and George Benson. Videos include the Jazzmakers series, in which performers explain their art to young people.

Those who like to make their own music can find books about playing jazz instruments and about particular kinds of music, such as ragtime. The library has many songbooks with vocal, piano, and guitar scores: jazz fans will especially like the Henry Mancini and George Gershwin songbooks.

Readers of all ages can find out about jazz. Children’s titles include "Mysterious Thelonius," "Little Lil and the Swing-Singing Sax," and "Hip Cat." Many fine biographies of jazz artists are available, including new books about Louis Armstrong, Billy Strayhorn, and Stan Getz in the adult collection. Keeping up with the current music scene is easy: just come in and enjoy the library’s subscription to "Down Beat" magazine!

DID YOU KNOW?

If you’ve been watching the news lately, you’re already aware that shaking a baby violently can be fatal. Shaken baby syndrome kills or severely injures 1,000 to 2,000 infants a year. Because a baby’s head is so heavy relative to his/her body weight, his brain is more easily injured than an adult’s. It is important to never leave a baby with people who may accidentally or purposefully use too much physical force with a baby. And if you need to wake a baby, pick him/her up gently and then pat gently – don’t shake!

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK:

A Chinese proverb says: "In the midst of great joy, do not promise anyone anything. In the midst of great anger, do not answer anyone’s letter."
