Welcome to Legal Revolution Week and National Plan to Promote Your Business Week. Friday is the anniversary of the First Special Olympics in 1968. One thousand athletes from the United States and Canada competed in that first gathering, but today, more than one million athletes from 146 countries participate in local, national, and international games.

Sunday is Rat-Catchers Day, celebrated on the possible anniversary of the day in 1376 when the Pied Piper of Hamelin piped the rats out of town and into the Weser River. Refused payment for his work, the piper then piped the children out of town and into a hole in a hill, never to be seen again. More recent historians suggest that the event occurred in 1284, when young men of Hamelin left the city on colonizing adventures.

Finally, Monday is Hot Enough for Ya Day, a day we are permitted to utter the words that suffice when nothing of intelligence comes to mind!

WHAT’S HAPPENING?

The class is limited to six students, so call today to reserve your place!

BOOK TALK

Children’s Librarian Mary Stickford provides this week’s book information. Papermaking is a fun and easy craft that both children and adults can enjoy. "The Art of Handmade Paper and Collage" by Cheryl Stevenson is a good book for beginning adults. It gives step-by-step instructions that are clearly illustrated with color photographs. The method is easy to understand and to follow, and before you know it, you are making beautiful hand made papers. Once you’ve mastered the basics, "Decorative Paper" by Diane Maurer-Mathison can show you how to turn that paper into something special through dyeing, marbling, and other decorative techniques. It then shows you several projects for your paper, including window treatments and lampshades.

For children, "Papermaking for Kids" by Beth Wilkinson is a good choice. The instructions and illustrations are clear and easy to understand, and a troubleshooting section provides answers for any problems you may encounter. Interviews with children about their papermaking can provide inspiration for anyone, child or adult, who thinks that this is a craft that they cannot do. Papermaking is fun and easy, and all the help you need is available at your Roswell Public Library.

DID YOU KNOW?

According to the Highway Safety Research Center at the University of North Carolina, at least one in nine serious traffic crashes involves a distracted driver. Nearly one-third of the drivers were distracted by something outside their vehicles. Other common distractions: adjusting the radio or CD player (11%); interaction with a passenger (11%); eating and drinking (2%); using a cell phone (1.5%); and smoking (1%).

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK: "The achiever never knows whether he is succeeding or failing, only that he is not finished." (unknown)
