Welcome to National Bible Week, National Family Week, National Family Caregivers Week, and National Game and Puzzle Week. Today is World Hello Day, which encourages everyone in the world to greet at least 10 people with a smile and a cheery "hello"!

Wednesday is National Stop the Violence Day, which calls for Peace on the Streets and a one-day "cease fire," the theory being if we can stop violence for one day, we can stop the violence every day. Thursday, of course, is Thanksgiving, and the library will be closed November 23 and 24 for the holiday.

Friday, the biggest shopping day of the year, is also Buy Nothing Day. Friday is also Sinkie Day, which encourages us to take a break from shopping and feast on leftover turkey using the time-honored, casual cuisine culture of dining over the kitchen sink. While you're at it, you can celebrate "What Do You Love About America" Day, which asks people to talk about what's great about our country.

Saturday reminds us that we have just 24 more shopping days (excluding Sundays and Christmas Eve) to get ready for Christmas and that in one month we'll begin the countdown for Christmas 2001!

WHAT'S HAPPENING?

Wednesday's 10:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Thanksgiving story times feature felt board stories, and participants will use precut turkeys to decorate a mobile, crown, and name plates. At Saturday morning's 10:00 a.m. story time, participants will use precut owls to decorate a pop-up card and a door hanger.

BOOK TALK

Librarian Mary Beth Wright provides this week's book information. ETIQUETTE...It is hard to spell, hard to say, and sometimes hard to know what to do in certain situations. As Amy Vanderbilt wrote in the introduction to the original 1952 edition, "I believe that knowledge of the rules of living in our society makes us more comfortable..." Amy Vanderbilt's "Complete Book of Etiquette" has been entirely revised and updated by Nancy Tuckerman and Nancy Dunnan. This book offers a ready reference for any aspect of daily living, from home to a formal occasion. Judith Martin's newest work, "Miss Manners' Guide to Domestic Tranquility," equips homes everywhere with the tools to return manners to domestic life. Martin believes your home can be an oasis even in this harried world. Good manners are equally important for children and teens. "Social Smarts:Manners for Today's Kids" by Elizabeth James and Carol Barkin is an up-to-date, upbeat guide for kids. The book is filled with practical information about manners in everyday life. "Elbows Off the Table, Napkin in the Lap, No Video Games During Dinner: The Modern Guide to Teaching Children Good Manners" by Carol Wallace is a clear, contemporary guide for parents. Wallace offers a step-by-step guide to raising cool and courteous kids.

There's a certain satisfaction and confidence that comes when we know we have put our best foot forward. Whether you are a child, a teen, or an adult, the library offers answers to your etiquette questions. Until then, mind your manners, and don't talk with your mouth full.

DID YOU KNOW?

According to registered dietician Suzanne Havala, the typical Thanksgiving meal will cost about $70 serve six. By tweaking your menu, you can save as much as 35% on the cost of the meal. Her suggestions include buying store brands instead of national brands; preparing more from scratch (perish the thought); buying a smaller turkey (unless your store has a great deal or is giving away free turkeys); shopping specials and sales; and using coupons. An on-line resource is www.directcoupons.com.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK: "We all waste too much time criticizing the faults of those whose strong points we could be praising." (unknown)
