Welcome to National Pharmacy Week, National Character Counts Week, Shopping Cart Safety Awareness Week, and Teen Read Week. Wednesday is International Boost Your Brain Day, so clean out the cobwebs, blast through the barriers, and click on the light bulbs in your brain!

Thursday is Evaluate Your Life Day, and Sunday is National Scientific Literacy Day. Sunday is also Mother-in-Law Day, to honor mothers-in-law for their contribution to the success of families and for their good humor in enduring all of those bad jokes!

WHAT'S HAPPENING?

At Wednesday's 10:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. story times, participants will hear stories about bats and make a bat mobile. There will be no Saturday morning story time this week because of the Altrusa/Friends of the Library Book Sale, which starts Friday night and runs through Sunday. At Friday night's preview sale, Friends of the Library members are admitted free. On Sunday, you can buy a bag of books for just $2!

You'll also want to make your reservations now for a fun-filled evening featuring appetizers, dinner, door prizes, and the premier performance of "Aliens in Transylvania," written by Frank Schlatter and performed by members of the Roswell Community Little Theater. The fun begins at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, October 27, at the library. Cost is just $40 per person, and reservations can be made at the library.

BOOK TALK

Librarian Rosie Klopfer provides this week's book information. The voters once again will choose who will live in the big White House. Here are some nonfiction titles dealing with this icon. "Backstairs At The White House," written by Gwen Bagni and Paul Dubov deals with the lives of great and small are intertwined in this engrossing saga of eight presidents starting with Taft and ending with Eisenhower as they were seen through the eyes of Lillian Rogers Parks and her daughter Maggie Parks.

In "Ghosts Of The White House," Cheryl Harness uses the ghost of George Washington, who pulls a girl out of her school tour and takes her on a personal tour of the building, introducing her to the ghosts of previous presidents. "Confessions Of A White House Ghostwriter," gives James Humes' unique perspective on American history covering five Presidents under which he served: Eisenhower, Nixon, Ford, Reagan, and Bush. You'll read about how the plaque that was planted on the moon was written, dancing with the queen of England, and nuclear disarmament over dinner with Churchill and Eisenhower.

Other books on the subject include "Facts About The Presidents: A Compilation Of Biographical And Historical Information From George Washington To Bill Clinton," by Joseph Nathan Kane; "Inventing Al Gore," by Bill Turque; and "Shrub: The Short But Happy Political Life Of George W. Bush," by Molly Ives.

The library also has videos on the White House and Presidents: The National Geographic Video, "In Side The White House," reveals the human side of the legendary house; "Presidents," by ABC, covers Washington to Bush; and "Portraits Of American Presidents," by NBC is a three-part series.
