Welcome to Be Kind to Humankind Week, which reminds us that "positive" stories about people far outweigh the negative news that we hear and read about so often. So take heart – most people are caring individuals. You can show that you care by being kind – this week and always! Today is More Herbs, Less Salt Day. Wednesday is the anniversary of the birth of the First White House Presidential Baby. Mrs. Grover Cleveland was the first First Lady to give birth at the White House when she gave birth to a baby girl (Esther) in 1893. The first child ever born in the White House was a granddaughter to Thomas Jefferson in 1806. Monday is Labor Day and Newspaper Carrier Day, the anniversary of the day in 1833 when the first newsboy in the US, 10-year-old Barney Flaherty, answered an ad in The New York Sun for "a number of steady men to vend this paper." WHAT'S HAPPENING? At Wednesday's 10:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. story times, participants will hear kangaroo stories and make a kangaroo with a pop-up joey. Participants at Saturday morning’s 10:00 story time will celebrate National Breakfast Month watching a stick puppet play, "Pancake Boy," and making a bacon and egg craft. BOOK TALK Librarian Lorena Blanco provides this week's book information. Driving those long distances between far away places in New Mexico can be much more pleasant with help from your Roswell Public Library. Before you turn on your engine, stop by the library and check out our latest talking books selections on compact disc – a big plus for those who don’t have a cassette player in their new vehicles! You can be swept away with the drama in John Grisham’s "The Brethren" as the miles fly by. Jonathan Kellerman will keep you on the edge of your car seat with his latest novel, "Monster." In this chiller, Dr. Alex Delaware and Detective Milo Sturgis are trying to make sense of a nonfunctional psychotic’s ramblings that seem to predict horrific killings happening in Los Angeles. If romance is more your speed, "I Thee Wed," a 19th century romance novel by Amanda Quick, will help those miles drift away. Deepak Chopra’s "How to Know God: The Soul’s Journey Into the Mystery of Mysteries" can help you find the way if you are looking for something more spiritual. All of these titles and many more are available on compact disc at your library. Most titles are also available on cassette, and all are guaranteed to make those quick trips out of town go even faster – with no speeding tickets! DID YOU KNOW? If happen to get a little road tar on your car while you’re driving those New Mexico roads that are under construction, try this tip from Earl Proulx. Use a rag to spread mayonnaise on the tar. Let it sit for a few minutes; then wipe clean. Another tip from David Solom, president of Nutz and Boltz is to shift into neutral if you are in traffic in hot weather for more than a few minutes. In neutral, the engine turns faster, and less friction is created. This pumps more fluid through the transmission cooler, keeping the transmission cool. For more information on Nutz and Boltz, try the web site: www.motorminute.com. Here’s a tip from the Highway Loss Data Institute that could prevent whiplash. Check your car’s head restraints every time you buckle up. To protect against neck injury, a restraint should be level with the top of your head and no more than two inches from the back of your head. If perfect adjustment is not possible, be sure that the center of your head meets the center of the head restraint. Never leave the head restraint all the way down. In a collision, your neck could snap back over it, making an injury worse. THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK: "Great minds discuss ideas; average minds discuss events; small minds discuss people."
