Today is the day to say "Happy Birthday" to the most often sung song in the world, "Happy Birthday to You," which was composed by schoolteacher Mildred J. Hill and her sister Patty on this date in 1859. The song, which is sung somewhere in the world every minute of the day, earned very little for its authors, but reportedly generated over $1 million a year for its copyright owner. Today is also National Columnist’s Day, a day to let your favorite columnists, local or nationally syndicated, know how much you appreciate them.

Saturday is the anniversary of the day in 1847 when the First US Postage Stamps were issued, a 5-cent stamp picturing Benjamin Franklin and a 10-cent stamp honoring George Washington. Saturday is also the anniversary of the First US Zoo, which opened in Philadelphia in 1874. For the admission price of 25 cents for adults and 10 cents for children, visitors could travel by foot, horse and carriage, and steamboat to visit exhibits featuring 1,000 animals.

In addition, Saturday is International Joke Day, and the anniversary of the day in 1862 when President Lincoln signed into law a bill levying a 3 percent income tax on annual incomes of $600-$10,00 and 5 percent on incomes of more than $10,000. This law actually went into effect, making it the first income tax levied by the US, but it was rescinded in 1872.

Sunday is I Forgot Day, a day to make up for all the birthdays, anniversaries, new births, graduations, etc. that you forgot to acknowledge with a greeting or gift. Monday is Compliment-Your-Mirror Day, so tell your mirror what a wonderful owner it has and keep track of whether other mirrors you meet during the day smile at you!

WHAT'S HAPPENING?

At Wednesday's 10:00 a.m. story time, participants can join science teacher Judy Powers to learn about a variety of live reptiles from her collection and take home a snake craft. Wednesday’s 3:30 p.m. UFO story time features puppet plays, activities, and UFO crafts. Saturday morning’s 10:00 story time celebrates the Fourth of July in stories and crafts.

BOOK TALK

Librarian Lorena Blanco provides this week's library information. An exciting summer is underway at your Roswell Public Library. The 2000 Summer Reading Program, "Read ‘Round the World," is underway, with prizes and events for people of all ages!

Teens can choose from a number of new titles to read this summer as they work they way towards fun and prizes. "Scorpions," by Newberry Award winning author Walter Dean Myers, takes a look at gangs and peer pressure.

Do you ever wish that you were somebody else? In Jean Davies Okimoto’s "to JayKae: Life Stinx," a troubled teen assumes the identify of his star athlete stepbrother in an on-line chat room.

Does it matter what the name of the town you live in is called? It does to the students of Scrub Harbor High. "What’s in a Name" by Ellen Wittlinger takes a look at things that bring people from a small town together and what drives them apart as she deals with issues of class and identity that form such a large part of teenagers’ lives. This summer, head to the Library for these and other great books that will help you keep your cool inside while the temperatures soar outside!

DID YOU KNOW?

Club soda is great for cleaning stainless steel sinks and kitchen appliances. To clean flatware, soak it in club soda until the fizz is gone, then rinse and dry.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK:
