Welcome to Direct Deposit Week, Solo-Preneuring Week, and National Creative Frugality Week. Today is A Room of One’s Own Day, and it is also the anniversary of the First Scheduled Transcontinental Flight (American Airlines nonstop from California to New York in 1959) and the First Televised Presidential News Conference (John F. Kennedy in 1961).

Wednesday is the 125th anniversary of the Dental Drill Patent (ouch). Wednesday is also National Compliment Day, so compliment at least five people (maybe even your dentist)! Friday is Fun At Work Day, so plan an activity in your work place that will release tension and build rapport through laughter.

Saturday is National Puzzle Day, and Sunday is Super Bowl XXXIV. Sunday is also National Inane Answering Message Day, so set aside some time to change, shorten, replace, or delete those ridiculous and/or annoying answering machine messages that waste the time of those who must listen to them!

WHAT'S HAPPENING?

At Wednesday's 10:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. story times, children will observe National Eye Care Month by hearing "Arthur’s Eyes," wearing "glasses," and making an Arthur "face." Saturday morning's 10:00 story time celebrates National Hot Tea Month. Participants can bring their dolls to a "Tea Party," where they will listen to stories and make a tile trivet.

BOOK TALK

Children’s Librarian Mary Stickford provides this week's book information. What does Y2K mean? It is the nickname for the year 2000: the "Y" stands for year, the "K" comes from the Greek word "Kilo" and stands for 1000, and the "2" means two kilos or 2000.

Another year, a new Millennium, a fresh start: yes, it is a great time to change your life with help from materials available at your Roswell Public Library. Want to stop smoking? Try "7 Steps to a Smoke-free Life" or "A Woman’s Way: The Stop-smoking Book for Women." Don’t want your kids to start smoking? Try "How to Help Your Kids Choose To Be Tobacco-free: A Guide for Parents of Children Ages 3 Through 19."

Think you should lose a few pounds? Try "The Body Code: A Personalized Wellness and Weight Loss Plan Developed at the World Famous Green Valley Spa" or "Outsmarting the Midlife Fat Cell: Winning Weight Control Strategies for Women Over 35 to Stay Fit Through Menopause." If you’re already happy with yourself and want to get happier, try "Contentment: A Way to True Happiness" or "How to Choose To Be Happy: The 9 Choices of Extremely Happy People."

If you don’t need any self-improvement, how about a little love? With Valentine’s Day approaching, get in the mood with love poems, found in "Classic American Love Poems," "Pearls of Love: How to Write Love Letters and Love Poems," and "Like the Singing Coming Off the Drums: Love Poems." For a lovely quote about love, check out "The Home Book of Quotations." If you want to read more about love, scan "Twentieth-Century Romance & Historical Writers" for authors you may have overlooked.

Remember, there are few better places to meet someone than at the library. Who knows? You might bump into that special someone while looking for books!

DID YOU KNOW?

As the year 2000 begins, the Roswell Public Library is taking time to remember the past and the events that have made an impact throughout Roswell ’s history. Everyone is encouraged to stop by the library and vote for the 25 historical events they consider to be the most significant. Ballots, with a list of suggested events, will be provided. You can vote for the suggested events or add some of your own. Ballots may be returned to the library anytime before February 15.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK: "A friend is someone who knows the song in your heart and can sing it back to you when you have forgotten the words." (unknown)
