July 1997 marked the 50th anniversary of the Roswell incident of 1947. Plans for an all out celebration have been made by the city and citizens. The following is a brief account of the incident provided by the Roswell UFO Encounter.

Sometime during the first week of July 1947, the foreman of the Foster Ranch, while riding out in the morning to check his sheep after a night of thunderstorms, discovered a considerable amount of unusual debris scattered across the pasture. Not knowing the significance of the wreckage, Mr. Mac Brazel took some pieces, showed some friends and neighbors then contacted the sheriff in Roswell. Sheriff Wilcox suspected the material would be connected with military operations in the area and notified authorities at the Roswell Army Air Field. The wreckage was retrieved and taken to the Roswell Air Field.

Ballard Funeral Home was contacted regarding the availability of small caskets and the preservation of bodies exposed to the elements for several days. When the mortician visited the base hospital he was escorted from the building. A nurse who worked at the base later told him of autopsies performed on several small non-human bodies. She drew sketches of the bodies on a napkin. Within a matter of days the nurse was transferred to England.

On July 8th a press release was issued stating that a wrecked "disk" had been recovered. Within hours a second press release was issued claiming that the wreckage was not a "disk" but a weather balloon.

An officer at the air base at the time testified to having seen the wreckage. It would not bum, bend or dent but weighed nothing and was very thin. The officers son who also saw the wreckage remembers the heirogliphic-like symbols.

What ever the truth may be - the curiosity over the incident has brought Roswell into the Spotlight. The city has been written about in articles and books, discussed in movies and television. There have been visitors from all over the world in Roswell to find out more about the Roswell Incident.
