Susan B. Anthony to Celebrate Womens Equality Day in Roswell
Susan B. Anthony, premier leader of the nineteenth century womens rights movement and advocate for woman suffrage, will join Roswell Business and Professional Women to celebrate Womens Equality Day with an ice cream social on the lawn of the Historical Society for Southeast New Mexico Museum, Second and Lea, on Sunday, August 24, 1997, at 6:30 pm. In addition to ice cream and socializing on the lawn, Miss Anthony will discuss the long battle for woman suffrage. Tours of the Historical Museum will also be available. Event sponsors include Natures Dairy and the Dairy Producers of New Mexico.
In August 1920, the Nineteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution guaranteeing women the right to vote was ratified by Tennessee, thus ending the seventy-two year fight for woman suffrage. The suffrage campaign is recognized as one of the most remarkable and successful non-violent political campaigns in the world. The anniversary of the ratification of the suffrage amendment is observed each year as Womens Equality Day.
Marilyn Adams, scholar and actor, will portray Susan B. Anthony at age eighty-five. She will discuss the political status of women in nineteenth century America and how that status led to the seventy-two year struggle for woman suffrage. Ms. Adams holds degrees in English from UCLA and has been a teacher of drama and English and actor for many years. She is the creator of a one-woman show entitled An Improper Woman about the various women who formed and led the nineteenth century womens rights movement. Ms. Adams performance is underwritten by the New Mexico Endowment for the Humanities.
The event is free and open to the public. Tickets for ice cream will be sold for $1.00. Each ticket entitles the holder to one bowl of home-made ice cream and a chance in a drawing for door prizes. Information on BPW membership and activities will also be available. For more information call 623-6886.
