Use of the HandiVans is for:

Seniors
The Infirm
The Disabled

Under the rules of the Paratransit Authority as set forth by the ADA, and with the advent of the City of Roswell bus system, the HandiVan is allowed to transport ONLY those who are elderly, infirm, or disabled. Therefore, those who do not fall into these categories are encouraged to make use of the Pecos Trails (City Bus System).

The HandiVans will continue to pick up and deliver from door-to-door those who meet the Paratransit criteria.

According to the ADA regulations, those who are certification eligible are described as follows:

  1.    Any individual with a disability who is unable, as the result of a physical or mental impairment (including a vision impairment), and without the assitance of another individual (except the operator of a wheelchair lift or other boarding assistance device), to board, ride or disembark from any vehicle on the system which is readily accessible to and usable by individuals with disabilities.

  2.    Any individual with a disability who needs the assistance of a wheelchair lift or other boarding assistance device and is able, with such assistance, to board, ride and disembark from any vehicle which is readily accessible to and usable by individuals with disabilities if the individual wants to travel on a route of the system at a time, or within a reasonable period of such time, when such vehicle is not being used to provide designated public transportation on the route.

  3. .  Any individual with a disability who has a specific impairment-related condition which prevents such individual from traveling to a boarding location or from a disembarking location on such system.

All rides must be paid for at the time of the ride. The fes are $1.00 per ride, $2.00 for the round-trip, with a dollar to be collected for any other stops on the way.

One day a week (TUESDAY) is set aside for a trip to the Rswell Mall. Please do not ask or expect to go on any other day.

One day a week (THURSDAY) is set aside for grocery shopping. South side in the morning and North side in the afternoon. Again, please do not ask or expect to go on any other day.

The remainder of the week, including the above Tuesday and Thursday, rides will be utilized for Doctor Visits, Medical Facilities, and General Travel.

NO same day rides will be accepted. All rides must be booked 24 - 48 hours in advance, and every effort will be made to get you to your destination in a timely fashion.

If you now have a "standing" appointment ... work, dialysis, ReHab, therapy, or the like, please call us so we can update our files. We want to serve you as best we can, but we need your help to do so.

Each ride is set up on a first come, first served basis. We try to accommodate your ride, but when the van is full, that is all we can take. When space is depleted the day will be termed as "FULL". For this reason that as soon as you get an appointment you call us so we can schedule the ride.

We recognize that all your rides are important to you. By the same token, if we have to say "NO" to your ride, be assured it's because that time period is filled. There will be times when we will ask you to go with us early so taht we can fit you in.

The HandiVan is a "curb-to-curb" service ... however, our drivers will assist from your door to the van and fromthe van to your destination. Under no circumstances will our drivers enter your home. (Also, we are not allowed to assist you into your wheelchair.) You must be ready to travel when we stop to pick you up.

Do not ask the driver to drop you off at a location not booked. There is a good possibility that we will not be able to come back for you for some time, and it may be out of his way at that time. All rides must be scheduled through the office (623-7778).
