Currently in the initial phase of construction, the Patricia Lubben Bassett Art Education Center will provide outstanding resources to the local and regional community. The Center is all about people and how the arts can serve as a form of empowerment in our daily lives, as a means of enriching human experience. When it is completed in the autumn of 1997, it will include eight thousand square feet of space dedicated to arts education, including four classroom spaces; a multi-purpose room for lectures, performances, screenings, workshops, and other programs; a Teachers Resource Center; and an expanded library.
The TRC is an aspect of the Museum currently being developed as part of the new Patricia Lubben Bassett Art Education Center. It will provide an educational outreach/inreach avenue for teachers of all levels and disciplines who desire to incorporate aspects of visual expression into their classes.
The Center will include educational "Discovery Boxes" which can be checked out by teachers for use in their classrooms. Discovery Boxes are self-contained thematic units with materials ranging to include videotapes, samples of arts and crafts, how-to books, curriculum guides and lesson plans. Planned topics include: Australian Aboriginal Art, Mask Making, Haitian Art, African American Artists, Women Artists, Latino Art and Culture, Southwest Indian Art.
In addition, the TRC will provide access to the Museums library on a non-circulating basis, including curriculum resource materials, and will provide meeting space where small groups of teachers can work together or alone to plan projects. Workshops and a newsletter for teachers are also being planned.
The Museum Library contains over eight thousand volumes and multi-media materials related to the art, history, and culture of the Southwest, as well as more general works on art history, criticism, and theory. The library is available on a non-circulating basis for use by scholars, teachers, and the general public. Library hours are currently 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
