Welcome to American Education Week, National Geography Awareness Week, and National Children’s Book Week. Wednesday is the anniversary of the First Presidential Library. President Franklin D. Roosevelt laid the cornerstone for his presidential library at Hyde Park, NY, in 1939, and the building was dedicated in 1941.

Wednesday is also Have A Bad Day Day. It could be a bad day if you can’t participate in the International Internet Moment. At precisely 3:53 p.m., Central Standard Time, on Wednesday, you can join the largest log-on in the history of cyberspace and be a part of the biggest world-wide connection ever.

Thursday is the 50th wedding anniversary of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip. Friday is World Hello Day, so be sure to greet at least 10 people during the day. Appropriately, Saturday, which is the anniversary of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, is also National Stop the Violence Day.

WHAT’S HAPPENING?

Trucks and other things that go are featured in stories and a stick puppet play at Wednesday’s 10:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. storytimes. Saturday morning’s 10:00 storytime celebrates Dog Day!

BOOK TALK

Mystery readers might enjoy reading the works of writers who specialize in locating their stories in the Southwest. Christine T. Jorgensen and Diane Mott Davidson set their stories in Colorado. Garrison Allen and J.A. Jance have their detectives living and sleuthing in Arizona, while Michael McGarrity and Aimee and David Thurlo have chosen New Mexico to flavor their mysteries. Although they differ in style, the setting often adds to the character and enjoyment of these novels, and the familiar surroundings make you feel right at home!

DID YOU KNOW?

According to CCC Information Services, car thieves favor Hondas. In 1996, the most-stolen car in the United States was the 1994 Honda Accord EX, and 6 of the 10 most-stolen cars were also Hondas. Many Honda parts can be used interchangeably on other Honda models, and stolen cars that can be sold as parts are favorites of car thieves. Another frequent target was the Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme, whose components can be used in many other General Motors cars.

If it takes you more than 30 minutes to fall asleep at night and you find yourself tired the next day, you may be suffering from insomnia. According to the Sleep Disorders Institute at New York’s St. Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital, the solution to the tossing and turning of insomnia is to change bedtime behavior. Here are their suggestions to help you fall asleep.

Don’t go to bed too hungry or too full. Don’t get into bed until you’re tired, even if it’s past your usual bedtime, and don’t work or watch TV in bed. Allow yourself only 15 minutes to fall asleep. If you’re not asleep by then, get out of bed, go to another room, and engage in a quiet, sedentary activity, one which is not too interesting. Then return to bed when you feel sleepy. This same rule applies if you wake up in the middle of the night and can’t get back to sleep. Remember, it’s important to avoid the "Drill Sergeant" approach, where you "command" yourself to sleep. The harder you try to fall asleep, the more alert your body and mind become.
