Peter Piper will appreciate the fact that this is National Pickled Pepper Week. The rest of us may prefer to take part in Get Organized Week, National Newspaper Week, and National Customer Service Week. If you’re really uptight, you’ll want to share your frustrations with all citizens of the world on Sunday. At 1200 hours Greenwich time, go outdoors and scream for 30 seconds in the International Moment of Frustration Scream Day!

The beginning of October also marks the anniversary of the beginning of this column, Library Topics, in the Roswell Daily Record in 1982. We want to take this opportunity to thank you, our readers and patrons, for your support and the newspaper for running all 780 columns – one a week for 15 years!

WHAT’S HAPPENING?

Lizards are the subject in stick puppet and felt board stories at Wednesday’s 10:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. storytimes. We won’t have a storytime on Saturday morning. Instead, plan to attend the Altrusa/Friends of the Library Annual Book Sale, October 10-12.

Friday’s "sneak preview" sale runs from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. and is free for members of the Friends of the Library. Admission for non-members is $2.00. There’s no admission charge for Saturday’s 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. sale or for Sunday’s 2:00-4:00 p.m. sale. Books will be sold for 75 cents an inch on Friday and Saturday and go for a buck a bag on Sunday. See you there!

BOOK TALK

Librarian Rosie Klopfer provides this week’s book reviews. The new, updated edition of "The John Hopkins Medical Handbook: The 100 Major Medical Disorders of People Over the Age of 50" provides in concise language the background you need to understand a medical disorder and prepares you for a consultation with your doctor.

The sixteen subject categories start with a general overview and go on to explain the system and how to keep it healthy and active. The index, cross references, charts, and pictures make this an easy and informative book to use. Unlike reference books, it can be checked out!

Ann Armbruster has written a six-book series on the Great Lakes, which includes "The St. Lawrence Seaway," "Lake Superior," "Huron," "Michigan," Ontario," and "Erie." Each book discusses the history and industrial and social significance of the lakes and includes nautical stories about them. Maps, illustrations, and colorful photos bring the fascinating history to life.

DID YOU KNOW?

Here’s one of the interesting pieces of information you’ll find in "The John Hopkins Medical Handbook" reviewed above. In an average life time, a person walks 115,000 miles. According to the book, that’s the equivalent of four and a half strolls around the planet!
