“The dream of yesterday is the hope of today and the reality of tomorrow.” These words of Dr. Robert H. Goddard, known as the father of modern rocketry, set the stage for the second annual Goddard Days Science Discovery Festival October 12-14, 2000, in Roswell, New Mexico. It is a celebration that honors the accomplishments of Dr. Robert H. Goddard (1882-1945) who contributed so much to the space program.
Seven year old Demetrio Woolworth was the winner of the art contest for a poster and T-shirt logo with Connad Higgans, age 8, the runner-up. A special judges award was given to Nicole Montgomery, age 17, for a design to be used on the brochure.
Astronomer Alan Hale is the recipient of this year’s Robert H. Goddard Award. Hale is one of the leading authorities on comets and co-discoverer of the Comet Hale-Bopp. He will lecture Thursday, October 12, 7 p.m., in the Roswell Museum and Art Center.
Science Discovery Student Day on Friday at the Roswell Civic Center brings students and teachers together in amazing interactive educational activities. At sundown on Friday, all eyes will be on the stars at the star gazing party at Military Heights Elementary School, 1900 N. Michigan. The stellar experts from the Roswell Astronomy Club will host this event. Their special guest is Quentin Wilson, one of the rocket boys in the movie “October Skies”. He will be bringing Miss Riley Rocket.
A variety of fun science activities for the entire family is scheduled for Public Day on Saturday 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. at the Roswell Civic Center. There will be a Science Place, Explora, Science Spectrum and much more. The Robert H. Goddard Planetarium will show the multi-media show Footsteps at 1:30 p.m. daily and Friday at 7 p.m., $3 admission.
Anticipation and excitement attend a community rocket launch on Saturday at the Cielo Grande Recreation Center, 1500 W. College, 8 to 10 a.m. To be qualified to fly, rockets must be made during the Roswell Recreation Department’s Rocket Building Workshop prior to the festival, or under the direction of the National Association of Rockets or an affiliate. Tours of the Robert H. Goddard collection at the Roswell Museum and Art Center are scheduled for 10 and 11 a.m.; 1 and 2 p.m. Saturday.
