Welcome to Recipe Greetings for the Holidays Week, a time to send and/or exchange recipes as great greetings.

Today, of course, is the anniversary of the day in 1941 when 200 Japanese aircraft attacked Pearl Harbor. The raid, which lasted little more than one hour, left nearly 3,000 dead, several US Navy ships sunk or disabled, and 200 US aircraft on the ground destroyed.

Thursday is Poinsettia Day, a day to enjoy the beautiful plant and to honor Dr. Joel Roberts Poinsett, the American diplomat who introduced the Central American plant named for him into the United States. Thursday is also National Ding-a-Ling Day, which honors bell ringers who charm our lives with beautiful music.

WHAT'S HAPPENING?

Wednesday's 10:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. storytimes feature snow in stories and a snow mobile craft. Saturday morning's 10:00 gingerbread storytime will include a variety of gingerbread boy stories and a decorate a gingerbread boy craft.

BOOK TALK

Children's Librarian Mary Stickford provides this week's book information.  With the holidays fast approaching, food is on everyone's mind. If you're looking for that special recipe for Christmas dinner, here are some books to check out.

Those of you who enjoyed the PBS series will love the companion book, "Julia and Jacques Cooking at Home" by Julia Child and Jacques Pepin. It provides the basics of French home cooking with color photographs of each step of the preparation. You can learn how to make the perfect omelet, from selecting eggs to folding neatly; how to prepare potatoes a dozen ways; and even how to make the perfect burger. The overwhelming majority of the instructions are for everyday foods prepared exquisitely. You are sure to learn some professional tips to make your meals terrific.

If you have special dietary restrictions, the library has many cookbooks written specifically for special needs. One of the newest is called "BetterHomes and Gardens New Diabetic Cookbook." Families plagued with allergies will find help in "Feeding Your Allergic Child: Happy Food for Healthy Kids," which includes 75 proven recipes free of wheat, dairy, corn, and eggs, or "Allergy Chef IV."

For fun cooking, you might want to check out "Orville Redenbacher's Popcorn Cookbook." You can add new life to your holiday baking with "Simply Sensational Desserts" by Francois Payard. It offers recipes for 140 classic desserts, along with basic techniques and finishing touches. Surprise those on your gift list with almond or pistachio brittles, coconut macaroons, apricot petits fours, chocolate yule logs, truffles, and toffees. Though the author is an acclaimed French chef, most of the recipes and instructions are simple enough for the novice baker.

DID YOU KNOW?

Here are a few easy ways to remove tough stains around the house from "The Old Farmer's Almanac 1999 Homeowner's Companion." Sprinkle food spills in the oven with salt immediately after removing food. By the time the oven cools, the paste will be dry. Gently scrape the spill with a sturdy spatula and then wash the area with a mixture of vinegar and baking soda.

Rub stubborn stains on cutting boards with a mix of baking soda and water and then rinse thoroughly. For mineral deposits around faucets, apply vinegar, let it sit for 10 minutes, and then scrub with a toothbrush.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK: "Folks sensible enough to give good advice are usually sensible enough to give none." (unknown)
