Welcome Adoption Week, National Bible Week, and National Game and Puzzle Week. Today is the 80th Anniversary of the First Play-By-Play Football Game Broadcast in the United States: Texas A&M blanked the University of Texas 7-0.

Wednesday is "What Do You Love About America" Day, one day to talk about what's great about our country and its people.

Thursday, of course, is Thanksgiving Day, the first US holiday by Presidential Proclamation. In 1789, George Washington responded to a request from a joint committee of both Houses of Congress to recommend "a day of public thanksgiving and prayer, to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God, especially by affording them an opportunity to peaceably establish a form of government for their safety and happiness." The library will be closed on Thursday and Friday.

Thursday is also Shopping Reminder Day. You have only 24 more shopping days (excluding Sundays, Thanksgiving, and Christmas Eve) after today until Christmas. One month from Thursday, a new countdown begins for Christmas 2000! Friday is Sinkie Day. SINKIES (people who occasionally dine over the kitchen sink) are encouraged to celebrate this time-honored, casual-yet-tasteful cuisine culture. This is a particularly appropriate day to become acquainted with the SINKIE style since Christmas shopping and Thanksgiving leftovers provide the perfect reasons to enjoy a quick meal!

WHAT'S HAPPENING?

Thanksgiving is celebrated with turkeys in stories and crafts at Wednesday's 10:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. storytimes. Saturday morning's 10:00 "Leftovers" storytime will include a variety of wonderful but neglected stories and lots of craft materials to inspire creativity.

BOOK TALK

The library's Mary Beth Wright provides this week's book information. With the holidays fast approaching, you will be attending parties and family gatherings with FOOD, creating special holiday FOODS, shopping and stopping for snack FOOD, and after a busy day, relaxing with your favorite FOOD. How can you eat right and stick to a healthy diet during this holiday season?

Suzanne Giesmann has written a book that will show you how to end your food craving. In "Conquer Your Cravings," Giesmann offers an effective four-step program that teaches you not just how to fight your cravings, but also how to get rid of them.

The book is not a diet book, but rather a book that offers a way to change the way you think about food and the way you react to it. If you have ever been obsessed with a craving and could not get it out of your mind until you consumed something you had no intention of eating, this invaluable, results-oriented, insightful book is for you!

"Conquer Your Cravings: Four Steps to Stopping the Struggle and Winning Your Inner Battle With Food" by Suzanne Giesmann can be check out at your Roswell Public Library!

DID YOU KNOW?

Here are a few more tips for happier holiday eating from Anne Fletcher, author of "Eating Thin for Life." Eat high-bulk, low-calorie foods, such as vegetables, tossed salads, and fruits, first to avoid consuming too many calories. Drink lots of noncaloric beverages before and during a meal. Be selective. "Scope out" the food selections and then decide on the ones you really want to eat. Eat slowly and sit (sorry SINKIES) while you eat. If you do overeat, immediately afterward do something that makes you feel good - walk in the fresh air, play an energetic game with the kids. Being active burns calories and eases that too-full feeling!

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK: "The most difficult arithmetic to master is the art of counting our blessings." (unknown)
