Welcome to Credit Union Week, National Pharmacy Week, Pastoral Care Week, and Teen Read Week. Today is Evaluate Your Life Day to see if you're really headed where you want to be! Saturday is Make A Difference Day and TV Talk Host Day. Sunday is Mother-In-Law Day, which honors mothers-in-law for their contribution to the success of families and for their good humor in enduring a constant barrage of bad jokes!

WHAT'S HAPPENING?

Wednesday's 10:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. storytimes are about spiders and include a jumping spider craft. Saturday morning's 10:00 bone storytime features stories to tickle your funny bone and chill your bones. Participants will eat dog "bones" and make bone necklaces.

Come in costume and ready for food, fun, and intrigue at the Second Annual Mystery Night at the Library, sponsored by the Friends of the Library and the Roswell Community Little Theater, Inc. The fun begins with hors d'oeuvres at 6:30, followed by a delicious dinner catered by the Roswell Job Corps at 7:00 and a performance of "Murder at the Banquet" following dinner. Cost for this great evening is just $40 per person.

Reservations can be made by calling the library at 622-7101 or by mailing your request and check to the Friends of the Roswell Public Library, 301 N. Pennsylvania, Roswell, NM 88201. Make your reservations early because seating is limited. While you're at it, why not include a check for membership in the Friends and support the library all year long!

BOOK TALK

The library's Lorena Blanco provides this week's book information. It's an old story. The four-year-old who begged for bedtime stories is now a 14-year-old, more interested in computer games than opening a book. What started out as a magical adventure has turned into a chore. To help change the scenario, the Roswell Public Library will observe the second annual Teen Read Week, sponsored by the American Library Association and the Young Adult Library Services Association. The goal is to turn teens on to reading, to encourage them to read for pleasure as well as learning. The message: "Reading Rocks!"

Teen Librarian Blanco says, "Librarians have long recognized that the teen years are a time when many kids reject reading as just another school assignment. They stop reading, and their test scores drop. Our goal is to remind teens that reading is not only important, it's also fun and free. They can do it any time, any place. We also want to support parents and other adults in encouraging teen reading.

Here are some tips for parents. Make reading a family activity. Set aside a special reading time for the whole family, turn off the TV, and make a bowl of popcorn. Ask everyone to share something they've read - a poem, newspaper article, or chapter of a book - over dinner or Sunday brunch. Read the same books your teenager is reading in school and talk about them. Be a role model. Let your teen see you reading for fun, as well as work.

"Sharing a book shows that you care," Blanco continues. "If you show books are important to you, that sends a message louder than any words!" If you need help, your Roswell Public Library is open seven days a week, and the friendly reference librarians can help you find good, fun reading materials!

DID YOU KNOW?

Security consultant Carlo Boccia warns us to tear up or shred unwanted credit card offers received in the mail. Otherwise, a thief could use one to apply for a card in your name - and based on your credit record - at a different address. The thief could charge thousands of dollars and damage your credit rating before you discover the problem. Tear up credit card receipts before you throw them away and never throw out receipts in public trash containers.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK: Andy Rooney says, "The average dog is a nicer person that the average person."
