Thursday is National Student Day, created to recognize all students from preschool through postgraduate. If you know some students, let them know how proud you are of them! Saturday is the anniversary of the day in 1947 when the US Air Force was established. Saturday is also the anniversary of the day in 1789 when the United States took out its first loan. Alexander Hamilton borrowed $191,608.81 from two banks without authority of law to pay the salaries of the President, senators, representatives, and officers of the first Congress. The loan was repaid by June 8, 1790. WHAT'S HAPPENING? Wednesday's 10:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. bee storytimes feature stories, pop-ups, and a bee mobile craft. Saturday morning's 10:00 storytime is a Pinatafest! Children will enjoy stories, crack a pinata, and make papel picado. BOOK TALK Librarian Lorena Blanco provides this week's book information. The air is getting crisper and the sun setting earlier on the Southeastern New Mexico skies. And with the excitement of a new school year comes the opportunity to read more than just the same old schoolbooks. Head to your Roswell Public Library for some reading to help you get into back-to-school mode. Middle and high school students can find a number of materials to help make homework a breeze. If entertainment is what you're after, a variety of new titles in the Young Adult collection will help you deal with some of the pressures of being a teen. Not sure where you fit in? Try reading "Breaking Rank" by Kristen D. Randle. This book tells the story of Baby, an outsider at his high school, who is befriended by Casey. Casey opens Baby's eyes to the realities of the group he hangs out with and shows him the way to a good education. But their friendship threatens their familiar worlds. As their lives become intertwined, a collision forces them to make difficult choices. Two new titles help teens deal with the problems of letting go of someone they care about. In "Rosey in the Present Tense" by Louise Hawes, a fatal accident claims the life of Franklin's girlfriend Rosey. Six months later, he still can't forget her. Franklin passes the time having conversations with Rosey in his head, but one day she answers back. Read this novel to see how Franklin copes with Rosey in the present tense. "I Miss You, I Miss You!" by Peter Pohl and Kinna Gieth tells the touching story of identical twin sisters, Tina and Cilla. While they look exactly alike, they couldn't be more different. When a fatal accident claims the life of Cilla, Tina is left behind and has to stand up straight and keep her balance in life without Cilla. Tina discovers herself in the aftermath of the accident and learns how to cope with the loss of her twin. These and other great books you'll find at the library are sure to provide a pleasant distraction and make the crisp, autumn nights a little cozier. DID YOU KNOW? Here are a few more tips found on the Internet. If you wrap celery in aluminum foil before putting it in the refrigerator, it will keep for weeks. When a cake recipe calls for flouring the baking pan, use a bit of the dry cake mix instead and you'll have no more white mess on the outside of the cake!
