Today is Another Look Unlimited Day. Take another look at your possessions and give surplus to charity. If you can't get to that on Tuesday, then Wednesday is your day. Wednesday is Do It! Day (aka Fight Procrastination Day). If you're organizationally challenged, today is the day for no excuses. Just do it! Friday is Sew Bet It! Day, celebrating the anniversary of the patent on the sewing machine on September 10, 1846. On Saturday, the New Mexico State Fair begins in Albuquerque. Saturday is also No News Is Good News Day, so take a day off from reading or watching the news and head up to the fair instead! WHAT'S HAPPENING? Wednesday's 10:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. chicken storytimes feature stories, a puppet play, and a hen and chick craft. Birthdays will be featured at Saturday morning's 10:00 storytime, and children will make a cupcake craft. BOOK TALK Librarian Rosie Klopfer provides this week's book information. Being a parent today can be as hard on children as on adults. The structure of today's families and values has been changing with the tide. We can stay with the current flow or paddle up stream. The library has a wide variety of materials to help, even for those just treading water. In the book collection, you might try "The Tween Years: A Parent's Guide for Surviving Those Terrific, Turbulent, and Trying Times Between Childhood and Adolescence" by Donna Corwin; "Tips for Raising Teens: A Primer for Parents," by Robert McCarty; "The War Against Parents: What We Can Do for America's Beleaguered Moms and Dads," by Sylvia Hewlett; "How to Really Love Your Children," by Ross Campbell; or "Children Learn What They Live: Parenting to Inspire Values," by Dorothy Nolte. Other book suggestions are "Parents - Passing the Torch of Faith," by John Drescher; "Put Yourself in Their Shoes: Understanding How Your Children See the World," by Barbara Meltz; "Smart Love: The Compassionate Alternative to Discipline That Will Make You a Better Parent and Your Child a Better Person," by Martha Heineman Pieper; "What To Do When Kids Are Mean To Your Child," by Elin Mccoy; "Successful Christian Parenting: Raiding Your Child With Care, Compassion, and Common Sense," by John MacArthur; and "The Value Book: Teaching 16 Basic Values to Young Children," by Pam Byrne Schiller. You'll also find help in some of the library's periodicals, including "Family Life," "Parents," "Home Education Magazine," "Mothering," and "Psychology Today." For those caught in the swift current, the library also has many talking books to listen to as you move rapidly along! DID YOU KNOW? Here are a few cooking, storing, and eating tips found on the Internet. Stuff a miniature marshmallow in the bottom of a sugar cone to prevent ice cream drips. Use a meat baster to "squeeze" your pancake batter onto the hot griddle for perfectly shaped pancakes every time. To keep potatoes from budding, place an apple in the bag. A slice of apple also softens up that lump of hardened brown sugar that lurks in the back of every pantry. THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK: "Anger is only one letter short of danger."
