Sunday is Be Late for Something Day, and Monday is Labor Day. The first observance of Labor Day is believed to have been a parade on September 5, 1882, in New York. In 1894, President Grover Cleveland signed the law making the First Monday in September a legal holiday. In most other countries, Labor Day is observed on May 1. The Library will be closed on Monday, September 6. WHAT'S HAPPENING? Wednesday's 10:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. storytimes feature a variety of apple fun. In addition to stories and puppet plays, participants will use an antique apple peeler, enter the wormiest apple contest, and make apple crafts. At Saturday morning's 10:00 storytime, children will learn about rice around the world, view displays of products made with rice, sample a variety of rice treats, and make a design with rice. BOOK TALK The library's Bob Kerwick provides this week's library information. Vatican City is a small city-state located entirely within the city of Rome, Italy. While very small in size, it is huge in influence and importance since it is the headquarters of the Roman Catholic Church, which has more than a billion members. Many writers have discovered that the church, like any other large institution, provides a fertile backdrop for stories of political in-fighting, intrigue, and mystery. One of the newer books, "Basilica" by William Montalbano, tells the story of a Miami policeman who teams up with a South American Cardinal to fight the drug cartel. The cop's family is killed by the cartel, the cop goes crazy, takes revenge on the dealer's family, is rescued by the Cardinal, and hidden away in a monastery. The Cardinal later becomes Pope, and the policeman becomes a Brother, involved in Papal security. The war on drugs continues. Another recent entry is Allan Folsom's "Day of Confession," in which an American attorney is called to Rome by his brother, a Vatican priest, shortly after the assassination of one of the leading Cardinals. The lawyer arrives in Rome to find that his brother has been killed in a bus explosion and that both he and his brother are prime suspects in the assassination plot. Other action adventure novels centered on the Vatican include "Counterparts" by Gonzalo Lira, "Assassin" by Thomas Gifford, "In the Name of the Father" by A.J. Quinnell, and Acts of Contrition" by John Cooney. As always, this is just a partial listing. Any of the library's friendly reference staff would be happy to help you find more! DID YOU KNOW? September is also the anniversary of the beginning of this column in 1982. The library would like to thank those who have made these 17 years of columns (that's 884 weekly articles) possible. We sincerely appreciate the Roswell Daily Record for the opportunity and their continuing support, as well as Linda Whitehead and Bob Bush for their assistance in getting the columns transmitted and on the Web. And thanks to you, our readers, for your interest and support! THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK: "The people sensible enough to give good advice are usually sensible enough to give none."
