Welcome to National New Friends, Old Friends Week. This is a week to celebrate old friends and meet new friends and to remember how vital friends are for our emotional, physical, and even professional well-being. Today is International Museum Day, National Bike to Work Day, and Visit Your Relatives Day, so grab your bike, pick up a friendly relative, and visit a museum!

Wednesday is National Be A Millionaire Day and National Employee Health and Fitness Day. Friday is National Waitstaff Day (express your appreciation to your waitress or waiter).

Sunday is the anniversary of the day in 1895 when the New York Public Library was incorporated, by joining two private libraries with a $2 million endowment and 15,000 volumes from the Tilden Trust. Our Roswell Public Library, one of the oldest in New Mexico, was founded in 1906 - six years before New Mexico became a state.

WHAT'S HAPPENING?

Foxes are the theme of Wednesday's 10:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. storytimes. Crafts include a mask, spool fox, and coloring sheet. Saturday morning's 10:00 storytime celebrates National Egg Month with stories and cracked egg crafts.

The library's "Creature Features" Summer Reading Program sign up begins on Saturday, too. You'll want to sign up for lots of fun learning activities!

BOOK TALK

The library's Lorena Blanco provides this week's library information. The temperatures are rising, and people are heading outdoors for fun activities and to prepare meals cooked over the open flames of a grill. Before firing up the Hibachi, head to your Roswell Public Library for some great new ideas guaranteed to make your next outdoor event a success!

Some of the newest selections in the cookbook section of the library include "Skinny Sauces and Marinades," from the Skinny Cookbook series. The low-fat recipes give a fresh twist to the same old chicken, steaks, and vegetables. Another great book is "The Firehouse Grilling Cookbook: 150 Great Grilling Recipes Plus Safety Tips." This book is all about barbecue cookery and how to get the best use out of your grill.

If you are entertaining outdoors and need some new ideas for fruity drinks with umbrellas, then you'll want to check out "The Complete Book of cocktails and Punches: A Connoisseur's Guide to Classic and Alcohol-free Beverages." Another great selection is "The Cultured Cocktail: 150 Classic Drinks from the Jazz Age to the Space Age." This book includes delicious variations for the designated driver to keep everyone safe this summer. These books are sure to make beverage choices a little more interesting than just lemonade this summer!

Now that you have the food and the drinks for great summer evenings, all that is missing is some "mood" music. The library has what you are looking for there, as well. Some of the latest CD hits in the library's collection include "The Globe Sessions," by Grammy winner Sheryl Crow, and the multi-award winning CD, "Wide Open Spaces" by the Dixie Chicks. If you can't get away for more than a weekend this summer, convert your backyard into the dock of the bay by throwing "Blues On the Bayou" by B.B. King into your CD player. We have many CD selections to make those lazy summer days more enjoyable.

So remember, before you start celebrating the summer, head to your public library to pick up books, CDs, and talking books to make the summer of 1999 the hottest ever!
