This week alone is Cartoon Art Appreciation Week, Be Kind To Animals Week, National Antique Bottle Collecting Week, National Family Week, National Pet Week, National Postcard Week, National Teacher Appreciation Week, National Tourism Week, National Wildflower Week, and Public Service Recognition Week. Thursday is No Diet Day (go ahead and eat that hamburger), Friday is International Tuba Day, Saturday is No Socks Day, Sunday is Mother's Day, and Monday is National Small Business Day. WHAT'S HAPPENING? Viva Cinco de Mayo! is the theme of Wednesday's 10:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. storytimes. Participants will enjoy bi-lingual puppet plays and make an Aztec fan, pyramid, and Mexican flag. Saturday morning's 10:00 storytime celebrates Mother's Day with stories and crafts, including making a Mother's Day card and necklaces and decorating a tile and gift bag. Congratulations to our Roswell Public Library for winning $2,500 toward the purchase of books and materials in the 3M "Check-It-Out Yourself Day at the Library" contest. Our library was one of only two $2,500 winners nationwide! BOOK TALK Librarian Rosie Klopfer provides this week's book information. It's craft time at the library, and you'll find a multitude of opportunities to express your creativity as you choose the decorative ideas, patterns, and color schemes for gifts or keepsakes. "Making Romantic Fabric-Covered Boxes," by Mary Jo Hiney, has cupcake, cottage, cube, garden, and sculpted egg and shell boxes. Give a friend a card creation or an old charm basket. Full instructions and pictures make this Victorian craft book a real charmer! Cross-stitchers will enjoy "Cute Cats and Teddy Bears: 25 Delightful Cross-Stitched Pictures to Sew" by Debbie Minton. The bears are adorable, and designs range from Nursery Bears to the Pen Pal Bear Card. The Cute Cats are just that and into everything from Moonlight Serenade to Tin Can Alley. All patterns are in color. Finished products can be used for everything from greeting cards to jar lids. Other new craft books to take a look at are "Carousel Horses in Cross-Stitch, by Donna Kooler; "A Victorian Flora Alphabet in Cross-Stitch," by Sue Hawkins; "Dyes and Paints: A Hands-on Guide to Coloring Fabric," by Elin Noble; "Woman's Day Dough Crafts for Kids," by Lorraine Bodger; "Paper Crafts," by Moira Butterfield; and "Ecology Crafts for Kids," by Bobbe Needham. Once you've had the fun of making these craft projects, the library also has a book on how to sell them: "Selling Your Crafts," by Susan Joy Sager. DID YOU KNOW? On May 18, you will be given an opportunity to vote on a bond issue that will almost double the size of the existing library. To give you an idea of how badly that expansion is needed, the Children's collection alone now has more books than the total moved to the library when it was built in 1978. We hope that you will visit your Roswell Public Library to see for yourself how busy it is and how much it provides our community. If you have questions or would like a speaker to visit your organization or club, contact Betty Long at 622-7101 or Darlene Logan at 624-8191. THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK: "Extravagance: how other people spend their money." JUDY ARMSTRONG, 624-7276
