Wednesday is Kiss Your Mate Day. Show your mate how much you care by sharing the pleasure of a kiss when he or she least expects it! Thursday is Moment of Laughter Day. Since the physical, emotional, and spiritual benefits of laughter are widely accepted, this day is set aside for everyone to take the necessary time to experience the power of laughter! Friday is Hairstylist Appreciation Day, International Walk Day (leave your car parked whenever possible), and National Honesty Day. Saturday is couple Appreciation Day, Sunday is International Unmothers Day, and Monday is Lumpy Rug Day. WHAT'S HAPPENING? Beautiful Pink Flamingos are featured at Wednesday's 10:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. storytimes in stories and crafts. Participants in Saturday morning's 10:00 storytime will celebrate May Day with stories and a May Basket craft. BOOK TALK Children's Librarian Mary Stickford provides this week's book information. Ready to cook? The library has two new cookbooks to make meal time a treat. "Claire's Italian Feast - 165 Vegetarian Recipes from Nonna's Kitchen," by Claire Criscuolo, makes heart-healthy Mediterranean cooking appetizing. However, the desserts would blow a low-fat diet out of the water. If you really want to go all out, Martha Stewart has done it again. In "The Best of Martha Stewart Living - Desserts, Our Favorite Recipes for Every Season and Every Occasion," you'll find delights, such as Chocolate-pecan Pie with Chocolate Crust, to tempt even the most jaded. The Tiramisu Wedding Cake looks stunning, the coconut Cake (with cream filling thick frosting) beats grandma's, and the chocolate desserts are all mouthwatering. Even if you only read recipes, this is an enjoyable cookbook! DID YOU KNOW? On May 18, you will be given an opportunity to vote on a bond issue that will almost double the size of the existing library. Between now and then, we will be bringing you more information about the library, its services, its users, and its needs. The Roswell Public Library celebrated 93 years of service to the citizens of Roswell and Chaves County on April 2, 1999. Originally a Carnegie Library, the first structure, one of the earliest libraries in the New Mexico Territory, was remodeled in 1952, adding 5,100 square feet. The existing structure was built in 1978, with a holdings capacity of 110,000 volumes. That projected peak capacity was met in 1991. Currently, the library has almost 157,000 volumes. Since 1978, many services have been provided for the public beyond the scope of books. Videos (many of which are closed captioned for the hearing impaired); Talking Books with current topics, new language skills, and entertainment in both fiction and nonfiction areas; compact Discs; Library Automation; and Internet Access have all had an impact on space allocation. We hope that you will visit your Roswell Public Library to see for yourself how busy it is and how much it provides our community. If you have questions or would like a speaker to visit your organization or club, contact Betty Long at 622-7101 or Darlene Logan at 624-8191.
