Welcome to National Boys and Girls Club Week, National Garden Week, and National Week of the Ocean. This is also National Library Week, a week to celebrate libraries and librarians, as well as the pleasures and importance of reading and libraries.

Wednesday is the anniversary of the day in 1828 when Noah Webster published the first dictionary of American English, the "American Dictionary of the English Language." Wednesday is also Thank You School Librarian Day.

Thursday, of course, is Income Tax Pay Day. Coincidentally, the day after is National Stress Awareness Day, which focuses attention on one of the leading health problems in the world today (stress, not income taxes).

Sunday is Pet Owners Independence Day. Dog and cat owners can take the day off from work and send the pets to work in their place since most pets are jobless, sleep all day, and don't even take out the trash!

WHAT'S HAPPENING?

Poetry is featured at Wednesday's 10:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. storytimes. Crafts will include writing poetry and making a poetry book. Participants in Saturday morning's 10:00 storytime will visit France with Madeline. Activities will include making a French flag pin and tasting French food.

BOOK TALK

Librarian Mary Beth Wright focuses on National Garden Week with some information on the library's gardening books. Whether you have or want to create a flower garden, vegetable garden, kitchen garden, herb garden, truck garden, or rock garden, come to the library and browse through our garden sections.

"Gardening In Your Greenhouse," by Mark Freeman, or "Irises: A Practical Gardening Guide," by Karen Glasgow, are two books that will help the novice gardener or the experienced horticulturist. If your child wants to help with the gardening, Maggie Smith's "This Is Your Garden" or Petra Boase's "The Ultimate Show-Me-How Activity Book" are worth checking out.

"Horticulture: The Magazine of American Gardening," "Organic Gardening," and "Better Homes and Gardens" are periodicals that can be of use when preparing your garden. With Internet access, the possibilities are limitless. Under the subject of Lawn and Garden or Gardening, you can find information on nurseries, personal garden pages, or regional garden information. Also, you can order seeds, bulbs, tools, and other supplies for your gardening project.

Either before, during, or after making those gardening plans, come check out your Roswell Public Library for answers to those gardening needs!

DID YOU KNOW?

Last fiscal year, 263,135 people used the library, an average of 21,972 people a month. Almost 480,000 library materials were checked out during that time period. The library's card holders can be divided into five age categories: 0-14, 26.91%; 15-21, 14.65%; 22-39, 27.09%; 40-54, 17.49%; and 55+, 13.84%. As you can see, people of all ages use the library, and they use it every day of every week.

On May 18, you will be given an opportunity to vote on a bond issue that will almost double the size of the existing library. Between now and then, we will be bringing you more information about the library, its services, its users, and its needs. We hope that you will visit your Roswell Public Library to see for yourself how busy it is and how much it provides our community.

If you have questions or would like a speaker to visit your organization or club, contact Betty Long at 622-7101 or Darlene Logan at 624-8191.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK: "Many people quit looking for work when they find a job." (unknown)
