March has blown in, bringing with it Ethics Awareness Month, Improve Your Management Skills Month, International Mirth Month, Music in Our Schools Month, National Craft Month, National Frozen Food Month, National Nutrition Month, National On-Hold Month, National Umbrella Month, National Women's History Month, Play the Recorder Month, Youth Art Month, and Optimism Month.

This week, you can celebrate National Procrastination Week, which promotes the benefits of relaxing by putting off until tomorrow everything that needn't be done today. It is also National Write A Letter of Appreciation Week, so send a letter expressing your gratitude to someone you appreciate! In addition, you can celebrate Newspaper in Education Week and Return the Borrowed Books Week.

Today is the 95th birth anniversary of Theodor Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss. It is also Read Across America Day, a national reading campaign that advocates that all children read a book that day.

Wednesday is I Want You To Be Happy Day, a day dedicated to reminding people to be thoughtful of others by showing love and concern, even if things aren't going well for themselves.

Thursday is the only calendrical date which is a command - March Fourth! Therefore, the day honors all of the gallant men and women who serve in all branches of the military, and it's known as Hug A GI Day! You can March Fourth yourself, to work, to school, to get the most out of life!

WHAT'S HAPPENING?

Wednesday's 10:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. storytimes focus on the octopus. Crafts will include a Rainbow Fish and Octopus bookmark. Mr. Zamora and his pigeons will visit Saturday morning's 10:00 storytime. The craft will be a red bird door hanger.

BOOK TALK

Librarian Barbara Harris provides this week's book information. Although the library is often considered a place for couch potatoes, rugged outdoor types will also find much to their liking.

Skim the latest issues of "Backpacker," "Walking," "Outdoor Life," and "Field & Stream" in the library, or check out older issues to take home and study more carefully. New books include "The Essential Guide to Nature Walking in the United States," "Fly Fishing for Trout in Streams," and "The Joy of Family Camping." You'll also find videos about fishing, hunting, backpacking, camping, and birdwatching.

If you want to explore new areas in which to enjoy your favorite activities, browse through the maps and pamphlets in our vertical files. The library's Internet terminals are the starting point for information about topics as diverse as hiking in the Carpathian Mountains, birdwatching in British Columbia, and fishing in the South Pacific.

Don't forget to ask the folks at the Circulation Desk for a vacation check out if you're going on a long trip and need books or other library materials for four weeks instead of two.

DID YOU KNOW?

According to David Solomon, the editor "Nutz & Boltz" newsletter, the safest place for a briefcase, purse or laptop computer while driving is on the floor of the car. If these items are on the seat, stopping short can throw them onto the floor and cause damage. If you must keep one of these items on the seat, use the seat belt to hold it in place. This also prevents a thief from easily reaching inside while you are stopped and stealing your valuables.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK: For the next few weeks, we'll be using quotes that the people quoted probably wish they had thought about more. This one comes from Jason Kidd, upon his drafting to the Dallas Mavericks: "We're going to turn this team around 360 degrees."
