December 7, 1941, is a "date that will live in infamy," but few people will remember February 23, 1942, the date the Japanese attacked the US mainland. A Japanese submarine fired 25 shells at an oil refinery at the edge of Ellwood Oil Field, twelve miles west of Santa Barbara, CA. One shell made a direct hit on the rigging, causing minor damage. President Roosevelt was giving a fireside chat at the time of the attack.

Saturday is No Brainer Day, a day to slack off and find the easy way out. If you are going to do anything at all, make it a "no brainer," something you can do without any serious thought. A drop in heart attacks is found on days like this, so consider it doctor's orders!

WHAT'S HAPPENING?

Wednesday's 10:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. storytimes focus on teeth. A tooth necklace and a coloring sheet are the day's crafts. Saturday morning's 10:00 storytime features soup and stories, and the crafts will include making a Monkey Soup Bowl.

BOOK TALK

Librarian Mary Beth Wright provides this week's book information. Are you planning that perfect vacation or dream weekend? If so, you might want to check out some of the travel guides found at the Roswell Public Library. These travel guides offer quick references to accommodations, restaurants, museums, historical background, activities, and shopping. Detailed maps, to help you get where you really want to go, are another helpful bonus.

If New York City is your destination, you might want to read the "New York City Handbook" by Christine Bird. "Frommer's Jamaica and Barbados" is packed with practical information for your trip to the islands.

Perhaps you're planning something different this year. If so, check out "Backroad Aventuring in Your Sport Utility Vehicle" by Jonathan and Roseann Hanson. "Free Vacations and Bargain Adventures in the USA" by Evelyn Kaye offers information about absolutely free and ecologically friendly vacations.

The library also offers a variety of other travel options, such as "Charles Kuralt's America" on audio-cassette or "Travel the World: Great Britain" on video. To finish your vacation planning, you might want to surf the Internet. Whatever your plans, you can turn your dream vacation into a dream reality by making your first stop the travel section at your Roswell Public Library.

DID YOU KNOW?

According to "Bottom Line Personal," art courses are not frills. Increasing evidence shows that students who do well in art education perform better across the board in school. Their grades and standardized test scores are better, and they have lower dropout rates.

A study by University of California at San Diego professor Dr. Nicholas Christenfeld of death certificates of people who died in California between 1969 and 1995 indicates that your initials may help determine how long you live. Men with "positive" initials - V.I.P., W.O.W., J.O.Y. - lived 4.5 years longer than men whose initials were meaningless. Women with positive initials lived 3.4 years longer. Theories are that people with negative initials are teased more as children. Also, the constant knock to a person's self-esteem each time he/she has to write negative initials (such as B.U.M.) takes a long-term toll.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK: For the next few weeks, we'll be using quotes that the people quoted probably wish they had thought about more. For instance, this one comes from NYC Mayor David Dinkins, answering accusations that he failed to pay his taxes: "I haven't committed a crime. What I did was fail to comply with the law."
