Monday is the birth anniversary of George Washington (1732-1799), and it is also the "birth" anniversary of the first chain store. Woolworths opened on this day in 1879 in Utica, New York. The chain announced its closing in 1997. WHAT'S HAPPENING? Wednesday's 10:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. storytimes focus on birthdays. Pretend cupcakes with candles and cherries and a candle headband are the day's crafts. Saturday morning's 10:00 storytime features African-American folktales, and the crafts will include a beaded necklace, a shield and a spear. BOOK TALK Children's Librarian Mary Stickford provides this week's book information. Nothing makes a home more inviting that the smell of home-baked goodies in the air. Whether you turn your hand to basic breads or delicate cookies, the library has a variety of cookbooks to meet your needs. "Baking with Julia" by Dorie Greenspan offers recipes from the PBS series hosted by Julia Child. Don't be intimidated by the name, "Julia"; the recipes are step-by-step guides to mixing, kneading, rising, shaping, baking, and storing a variety of breads, as well as complete how-to's for whipping up rich cakes and pastries. For those more comfortable with simpler recipes, the "Better Homes and Gardens Complete Book of Baking" offers hundreds of recipes, complete with nutrition information for keeping track of fat grams. Cooks ready to bake with an international touch should try "How to Bake: The Complete Guide to Perfect Cakes, Cookies, Pies, Tarts, Breads, Pizzas, Muffins, Sweet and Savory." As the title indicates, baker Nick Malgieri provides instructions, including diagrams and color photos, for a variety of kitchen creations. Prefer to go right to the good stuff? Marcel Desaulniers offers "Death by Chocolate Cookies." Surely someone you know needs to start the day with "Chocolate Chip Cocoa Flapjack Stacks with Warm Strawberries, Chocolate Syrup, and Toasted Pecan Maple Cream" or maybe finish it with "Pumpkin Pecan Chocolate Chunk Fritters with Cinnamon Apple Ice Cream and Chocolate Cream Anglaise." If those recipes sound too labor intensive, try Marie Simmons' "Bar Cookies A to Z." It has easy recipes for old favorites like "Figgy Bars" and "Hermits" and new favorites like "Energy Bars" and "Tropical Rain Forest Crunch Bars." If you've developed a craving for something special, the library has a cookbook to help you fill your need. And, if you've filled your cravings a little too much, there are plenty of cookbooks to meet your need for special diets and nutritional information. DID YOU KNOW? We've just experienced a "Blue Moon" (two full moons in one month), but did you know that February 1965 is the only month in recorded history not to have a full moon. Here are a couple of other useless facts for you to consider. Dueling is legal in Paraguay as long as both parties are registered blood donors. "Underground" is the only word in the English language that begins and ends with the letters "und." And if you're a lefty, you'll appreciate this: "Stewardesses" is the longest word that is formally typed using only the left hand! THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK: For the next few weeks, we'll be using quotes that the people quoted probably wish they had thought about more. For instance, this one comes from Mayor Marion Barry, Washington, DC: "Outside of the killings, Washington has one of the lowest crime rates in the country." JUDY ARMSTRONG, 624-7276
