Welcome to Love May Make the World Go 'Round, But Laughter Keeps Us From Getting Dizzy Week! This week is dedicated to Victor Borge's notion that "Laughter is the shortest distance between two people" and Joel Goodman's notion that "Seven days without laughter makes one weak."

This is also Random Acts of Kindness Week. The goal of this week is to reverse the tide of anger in our society by deepening our connection with others through the practice of simple, day-to-day kindness to our fellow human beings.

Friday is Lost Penny Day, celebrated annually on Abraham Lincoln's birthday. This day is set aside to put all of those pennies you have stashed in candy dishes, bowls, and jars back into circulation by giving them to your favorite charity.

Sunday is National Have-a-Heart Day, Race Relations Day, Valentine's Day, World Marriage Day, and Read To Your Child Day ("Show your kids you love them; Read to them). Monday is Presidents' Day, and the library will be closed.

WHAT'S HAPPENING?

Valentine's Day is the theme for Wednesday's 10:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. and Saturday's 10:00 a.m. storytimes. Participants will make an assortment of Valentines, a valentine headband, and a gift bag and gift tag for family and friends. You won't want to miss these special storytimes!

BOOK TALK

The library's Bob Kerwick provides this week's book information. Most of us associate the term "Forensics" with coroners, pathologists, or medical examiners, but it actually refers to the application of medical knowledge to civil or criminal law. The library's fiction collection has a number of books featuring practitioners of the Forensic Arts. Some are about coroners, pathologists, or medical examiners; some are not.

Probably the best known of the medical examiners is Kay Scarpetta, made famous by Patricia Cornwell in several books, including "Cause of Death," "The Body Farm," and "From Potter's Field." Other books centered around medical examiners or coroners are "Deja Dead" by Kathleen Reichs; "Harvest" and "Bloodstream" by Tess Gerritsen; and "Deadly Care," "Deadly Medicine," and "Deadly Practice" by Leonard Goldberg.

Forensic psychologists/psychiatrists are featured in books by Sarah Lovett, Anna Salter, and Shirley Kennett. Sarah Lovett writes about a forensic psychologist working at the New Mexico State Prison. Her works include "A Desperate Silence," "Acquired Motives," and "Dangerous Attachments."

Anna Salter is the author of "Shining Water." Shirley Kennett's "Fire Cracker" features P.J. Gray, a psychologist who specializes in forensic computer simulation. Additional books you might enjoy are "Denial" by Keith Ablo and "Body Language" by James Hall.

As always, this is only a partial listing, and the friendly reference staff would be happy to help you find more!

DID YOU KNOW?

As we approach the 21st Century, we find our language changing to adapt to the new world. For instance, the phrase "Mouse Potato" refers to the online, wired generation's answer to the couch potato. "Swiped Out" refers to an ATM or credit card that has been rendered useless because the magnetic strip is worn away from extensive use. "Percussive Maintenance" is the fine art of whacking the crud out of an electronic device to get it to work again."

Finally, "Uninstalled" is a euphemism for being fired. Heard on the voicemail of a vice president at a downsizing computer firm: "You have reached the number of an uninstalled vice president. Please dial our main number and ask the operator for assistance." (a.k.a. "decruitment)

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK: "Never agree to plastic surgery if the doctor's office is full of portraits by Picasso." (unknown)
