Welcome to International Lipstick Week, a time to celebrate all of the beautifying powers of lipstick! Friday is A'Phabet Day, also known as "No-L" Day. People who do not want to send Christmas cards, but do want to greet their friends, should send out cards listing the letters of the alphabet in order, but with a gap where the "L" should be.

Of course, Friday is also Christmas, and Saturday is National Whiner's Day. The day after Christmas is dedicated to whiners, especially those who return Christmas gifts and need lots of attention!

The library will close at 1:00 p.m. on December 24 and will be closed all day on December 25 for the Christmas holiday. The staff of your Roswell Public Library wishes you the very best holiday season ever!

WHAT'S HAPPENING?

Wednesday's 10:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Christmas storytimes feature stories and a variety of crafts with a Christmas theme. At Saturday morning's 10:00 Doll Tea Party storytime, participants are asked to bring their new or favorite doll for "tea" and cookies. Participants will decorate doll finger puppets.

BOOK TALK

The library's Bob Kerwick provides this week's book information. Do you like politics but are burned out on the never-ending soap opera taking place in Washington? Then switch to political fiction. You'll find a much wider variety of good guys and bad guys, heroes and villains - and lots more action!

A good place to start is with the old classic "Advice and Consent," written by Alan Drury way back in 1959 and followed by a slew of others. John Erlichman, famous or infamous from his days in the Nixon White House, has written several surprisingly good novels; "The Company," "The Whole Truth," and "The China Card." In "Balance of Power," author James W. Huston portrays a dramatic constitutional crisis as the President and the Speaker of the House battle for control of a U.S. Navy Task Force.

E.J. Gorman writes about the First Lady facing allegations that she committed murder to cover up an affair. The title is, of course, "First Lady." "Primary Colors," written anonymously by Joe Klein, is a thinly disguised story of the Clinton campaign and presidency. Charles McCarry's "Lucky Bastard" features John Fitzgerald Adams, who believes himself to be the love child of JFK, as a politician with very dangerous friends.

In "Hard Target," author Christopher Hyde asks the question, "what would happen if the President of the U.S. became mentally ill and no one knew about it?" Vince Flynn, in "Term Limits," has a band of "patriots" trying to reform the government by assassinating several key political leaders and threatening to kill more if the leadership does not get serious about reform.

Several other titles that might strike your fancy are "Purple Dots" by Jim Lehrer, "Against All Enemies" by Richard Herman, "No Safe Place" by Richard North Patterson, and "By Order of the President" by Michael Kilian. This is a short list of political thrillers available at your library. Ask any of the friendly reference staff for help in finding more!

DID YOU KNOW?

The Mayo Clinic offers these tips to help you handle the extra stress of the holidays. First, plan ahead, and don't plan more than you can comfortably accomplish. Also, schedule some time for solitude and relaxation. Don't eat or drink more than you're accustomed to just because it's the holiday season. Get plenty of sleep and leave time for exercise. Develop a budget before you go shopping and stick to it. Be realistic. As families change and grow, traditions may need to change as well. Also, set differences aside and try to accept family members as they are.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK: "If you want to keep the wrinkles off your face, keep the sunshine in your heart." (unknown)
