Wednesday is the 225th anniversary of the Boston Tea Party, and Thursday is the 95th anniversary of the Wright Brothers' first powered and controlled airplane flight. Friday is Underdog Day, a day to honor all of the unsung heroes, the Number Two people who contribute so much to the Number One people we read about. Finally, Monday is Humbug Day. If you're feeling a little frustrated with all of the preparations for the holidays (shopping, cooking, shopping, wrapping, shopping, decorating, etc.), you're allowed 12 humbugs on Monday to vent! WHAT'S HAPPENING? Wednesday's 10:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Star storytimes feature stories and a shadow puppet play. Participants will make a crown of stars and a star mobile. At Saturday morning's 10:00 Gingerbread storytime, participants will make a variety of decorations and cards with a Christmas theme. BOOK TALK The library has been adding to its collection of books on watercolor technique. There are books that will give a general overview of the various techniques recommended for beginners in a step-by-step format. Other books will deal specifically with a particular aspect, such as color or light. Some will concentrate on a style or subject, such as flowers or people. You'll find everything from Zoltan Szabo's "Color-by-Color Guide to Watercolor" to Jaqueline Penney's "Painting Greeting Cards in Watercolor." If you enjoy looking at beautiful paintings but do not paint yourself, you'll find these books are a treat for the eyes. You'll get a lot of pleasure from reading and admiring the wide variety of beautiful art illustrated in the books, even if you never lift a paintbrush! Librarian Mary Beth Wright Provides some information on another artistic craft. If you enjoy counted cross-stitch, you'll enjoy these new arrivals at the library. "Celtic Cross Stitch" by Gail Lawther has step-by-step instructions to enable you to create the ancient Celtic knot designs. If you prefer more traditional needlecraft, "Cross-Stitch Samplers" by Better Homes and Gardens provides many favorite motifs. For a variety of cross-stitch patterns, Jodie Davis's book, "A Year of Cross Stitch," begins with a miniature course in cross-stitch that covers all the basics, as well as project tips. If you want to get your children started in this creative type of embroidery, Jane Greenoff has a series of cross-stitch books. Look for "Cross Stitch Dinosaurs," "Cross Stitch Farmyard," or "Cross Stitch on the Move." All it takes to craft handmade treasures for display or gift giving is the desire to create something with one's own hands. With these cross-stitch books, you will be able to design and make a treasured keepsake. DID YOU KNOW? The holidays are full of eating, so here are a couple of bits of fun food facts. In the United States, a pound of potato chips cost two hundred times more than a pound of potatoes. Caesar salad has nothing to do with any of the Caesars. It was first concocted in a bar in Tijuana, Mexico, in the 1920's. And if you want to create a bit of "food magic," a raisin dropped into a glass of fresh champagne will bounce up and down continually from the bottom of the glass to the top! THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK: "It's hard to train a child in a way the parents don't go themselves." (unknown) JUDY ARMSTRONG, 624-7276
