Welcome to a week of "weeks." This is National Bible Week, National Family Caregivers Week, National Adoption Week, and National Game and Puzzle Week. Wednesday is Shopping Reminder Day. Just one month before Christmas, this day serves as a reminder to shoppers that there are only 23 more shopping days (excluding Sundays, Thanksgiving, and Christmas Eve) until Christmas.

Thursday, of course, is Thanksgiving, the first holiday by Presidential Proclamation. President George Washington proclaimed November 26, 1789, to be Thanksgiving Day in response to a request from both Houses of Congress for a day of public thanksgiving and prayer. Thursday is also "What Do You Love About America" Day, a day to put aside cynicism and talk about what's great about our country and its people.

The library will be closed on Thursday and Friday to observe the Thanksgiving Holiday. You and your family are wished a very Happy Thanksgiving from the entire staff of your Roswell Public Library!

WHAT'S HAPPENING?

Wednesday's 10:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Thanksgiving storytimes feature stories and turkey crafts. Saturday morning's 10:00 National American Indian Heritage Month storytime features stories, and participants will make headdress and rock art crafts.

BOOK TALK

The Library's Bob Kerwick provides this week's book information. Most readers are familiar with Jean Auel's series, Earth's Children. The series has been very popular since the first installment, "Clan of the Cave Bear," was published in 1980. This was followed by "The Mammoth Hunters," "The Valley of Horses," and "The Plains of Passage."

While Ms. Auel has been a leader in popularizing the Prehistoric Epic, she is not alone. Other writers who are making their mark in this genre include the Gears (W. Michael and Kathleen O'Neal), with their series "Peoples of the Earth." This series is set in North America and includes "People of the Wolf," "People of the Fire," and "People of the Mist."

Sue Harrison has written several novels of this type, including "Mother Earth, Father Sky" and "My Sister the Moon." Linda Lay Shuler writes about an Anasazi woman who travels with the god, Kokopelli, in "She Who Remembers." "Singletusk," by Bjorn Kurten, is an Ice Age story featuring a male protagonist who goes on a quest to bring back a healer. Piers Anthony has several entries in this field, including "Isle of Woman" and "Shame of Man." The most recent addition in this genre is Judith Tarr's "White Mare's Daughter."

As always, this is only a partial listing. The friendly reference librarians would be happy to find more items for your reading pleasure!

DID YOU KNOW?

An article in the March 20, 1955, Roswell Daily Record announces the recent installation of an escalator at the Eastern New Mexico Medical Center, which was scheduled to open the next month. It was hoped that the escalator, the first to be installed in a hospital and the first to be installed in any building in Roswell, would save time and reduce expense. Chairman of the board of directors, Dan H. Wilmot, Jr., says: "A very direct saving can be easily computed, as it is the elimination of an elevator operator. If we were to pay one operator $150 per month, or $1,800 per year, operators for two elevators would cost $3,600 annually. Therefore, labor saving alone will pay for the escalator in five or six years."

If you're interested in Roswell's history, a great way to explore it is by sorting through the old copies of the newspaper on microfilm at the library!

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK: "If you don't have all the things you want, be grateful for all of the things you don't have that you don't want." (unknown)
