Welcome to Getting the World to Beat a Path to Your Door Week, National
Forest Products Week, National Health Education Week, National Business Women's Week, and
National School Bus Safety Week.
Friday is TV Talk Show Host Day. Saturday is Care-Acter Day, a day to
show the backbone of our character through acts of caring. Saturday is also Make A
Difference Day, so you should have plenty of opportunities to care!
Sunday is Mother-In-Law Day, which honors these women for their
contribution to the success of families and for their good humor in enduring countless bad
jokes. And don't forget to turn you clocks back an hour before you go to bed on Saturday
night because Daylight Saving Time ends on Sunday morning at 2:00. Remember, spring
forward, fall back and enjoy that extra hour of sleep!
WHAT'S HAPPENING?
Wednesday's 10:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. storytimes feature tigers in
stories and a puppet play. At Saturday morning's 10:00 storytime, participants will learn
about "Dia De Muertos" (Day of the Dead) at an educational program about its
history and celebration. They'll make a skull mask (calaveras) and eat "Bread of the
Dead" (pan de muertos).
The Friends of the Roswell Public Library with the Roswell Community
Little Theater are sponsoring a Halloween dinner theater production of "Murder at
Midnight" on Saturday, October 31, at the library. The evening includes hors
d'oeuvres, a gourmet dinner, fun mystery production, and prizes. Although costumes are
encouraged, they are not required. Cost for the dinner and play is $40 per person, and
proceeds will go to the library expansion fund. Seating is limited, so make your
reservation early at the library!
BOOK TALK
Many people are collectors. Some collect a wide variety of things,
while others concentrate on a specific type of collectible, like coins or stamps. Your
Roswell Public Library has many books on collecting and collectibles that will help you to
learn more about the type of items you are acquiring and to determine their value.
Some of the newest books are "The Illustrated Encyclopedia of
Civil War Collectibles," "Miller's Collecting the 50's," "Caring For
Your Collectibles," and "Collectibles Market Guide & Price Index."
Other books deal with a specific collectible, such as "Collecting
Baseball Memorabilia," "America's Collectible Cookbooks," "American
Family Farm Antiques," and "World War II Collectibles." You'll find books
on collecting for every age group, as well as "Antiques & Collecting
Magazine." For a complete list of the library's resources, come in and check out our
catalog!
DID YOU KNOW?
Here are the last of our "totally useless facts" found on the
Internet. For instance, in the Great Fire of London in 1666, half of the city was burned
down, but only six people were injured. Only one person in two billion will live to be 116
years old. Dueling is legal in Paraguay as long as both parties are registered blood
donors. The average ear of corn has eight hundred kernels arranged in sixteen rows.
"Stewardesses" is the longest English word that is formally
typed using only the left hand. "Underground" is the only word in the English
language that begins and ends with the letters "und." Finally, fans probably
already know that no NFL team that plays its home games in a dome has ever won a
Superbowl. Whether that's because of the dome or the team remains to be seen!
THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK: "The key to fixing the education problem is
simple: just convince students to use their library cards like their parents use credit
cards." (unknown)
