This week ushers in the month of October, which is Adopt-A-Shelter Animal Month; Auto
Battery Safety Month; Computer Learning Month; and International Fired-Up Month, a month
focusing on enthusiasm and joy, where people learn what gets them fired up and incorporate
that into their lives! It is also Month of the Dinosaur, National Communicate With Your
Kid Month, National Cookie Month, and National Dessert Month (remember, stressed is
desserts spelled backwards). But there's still more! October is National Make a Will
Month, National Pizza Month, National Pork Month, National Roller Skating Month, National
Stamp Collecting Month, National Toilet Tank Repair Month, Talk About Prescriptions Month,
and (my personal favorite) National Popcorn Poppin' Month!
WHAT'S HAPPENING?
Wednesday's 10:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. mouse storytimes feature big books
and make mouse pictures and popup crafts. Saturday morning's 10:00 storytime celebrates
popcorn month with corny stories and activities, including a "Guess How Many Kernels
of Corn Are in the Jar" contest, making corn cob prints and a corn collage, eating
popcorn, and a take home "Popcorn Grow-It Kit."
BOOK TALK
Here are some more titles from the library's growing collection of
talking books, CD ROM books, and software, provided by Librarian Larry Holm. For hearty,
gutsy, and appealing stories, nothing compares to Westerns. New titles "King of the
Wind," "The Wild West," and "Log of a Cowboy" are sure to be
favorites. Those fascinated by true stories will appreciate "The Rise and Fall of
Jesse James." Willie Nelson ponders Western classics in "My Favorite Louis
L'Amour Stories."
Fans of romance will enjoy "Something Like a Love Affair"
from Julian Symons, Johanna Lindsey's "Love Me Forever," Nicholas Sparks'
"Message In a Bottle," Nora Roberts' "Homeport," Caroline Harvey's
"Legacy of Love," and Barbara Delinsky's "Moment to Moment."
Adventure lovers will find thrills galore with new titles including
"Mist in the Mirror," "Point Last Seen," "Shards of Honor,"
and "Rogue Warrior: Seal Force Alpha." Popular titles like McMurtry's
"Buffalo Girls," Sandford's "Silent Prey," and Atwood's
"Wilderness Tips," stay in continuous circulation! And you won't want to miss
the Star Wars Series, including "I Jedi," "Rebel Agent," "Wraith
Squadron," and "The Paradise Snare."
DID YOU KNOW?
Here's some more "totally useless information" found on the
Internet. For instance, did you know that our eyes are always the same size from birth,
but our nose and ears never stop growing (even if we aren't telling lies like Pinocchio).
Babies are born without kneecaps. They don't appear until the child is 2-6 years of age.
In the animal world, armadillos have four babies at a time, and they
are always the same sex. A pregnant goldfish is called a twit. An ostrich's eye is bigger
than its brain. The longest recorded flight of a chicken is 13 seconds. Speaking of
flight, if NASA sent birds into space, they would soon die because birds need gravity to
swallow.
Cats have over one hundred vocal sounds, while dogs have only about
ten. Nevertheless, Goethe couldn't stand the sound of barking dogs and could only write if
he had an apple rotting in the drawer of his desk. And just in case you ever find yourself
in this predicament, to escape the jaws of a crocodile, push your thumbs into its eyes. It
will release you instantly!
THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK: "When you go into business for yourself, it
takes the fun out of payday." (unknown)
