Today is the first day of September, which
is American Heritage Month, Be Kind to Editors and Writers Month, Children's Good Manners
Month, National Chicken Month, National Honey Month, National Humor in Business Month,
National Mushroom Month, National Piano Month, National Rice Month, National School
Success Month, National Veterinary Month, and Self-Improvement Month.
To start your self-improvement, you might want to celebrate
Self-University Week beginning today. This week reminds adults (in or out of school) that
each of us has a responsibility to help shape the future by pursuing life-long learning.
It is committed to self-education as the lifeblood of democracy and the key to living life
to its fullest. What better way to continue your life-long learning than by visiting your
Roswell Public Library!
Friday is Newspaper Carrier Day, the anniversary of the 1833 hiring of
the first "newsboy" in the United States, and Saturday is Be Late for Something
Day.
September is also the anniversary of the beginning of this library
column in the Roswell Daily Record sixteen years ago -- one column per week for 16 years
or 832 columns! The library sincerely appreciates the support of the newspaper and others
who make this column possible. Did you know that you can access the library column on the
Internet? Our thanks to Bob Bush for adding the column to this site and to Linda Whitehead
for her assistance in transferring data! The address is http://roswell-usa.com/library/topics980901.htm.
WHAT'S HAPPENING?
It's apple picking time at Wednesday's 10:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.
storytimes, which feature stories, a stickpuppet play, and make an apple crown and card
craft. Saturday morning's 10:00 storytime celebrates National Honey Month with stories and
a make a popup bee craft.
Monday is the Labor Day Holiday, and the library will be closed.
BOOK TALK
Librarian Mary Beth Wright provides this week's book information.
Stress, strESS, STRESS! Everyone deals with stress daily. Each person handles stress
individually, coping with stress through laughter, relaxation, eating, or prayer. If,
however, there are days when stress seems to be the winner, come to the Roswell Public
Library where there are books, audiocassettes, videos, and Internet websites dealing with
stress management.
"Relax: You may Have Only a Few Minutes Left," written by
Loretta LaRouche, is a witty book that uses humor to help you overcome stress in your life
and work. Another book of interest might be Susan Mitchell's "I'd Kill For a Cookie:
A Simple Six-Week Plan to Conquer Stress Eating." If your preference is listening to
audiocassettes, try "Letting Go of Stress" by Emmett e. Miller. Exercise and
Jane Fonda team up to reduce stress in "Jane Fonda's Stress Reduction Program"
video.
Barbara Oehlberg realizes that children have stress in their lives and
has written "Making It Better: Activities for Children Living in a Stressful
World." In addition, the Internet has several websites on stress management that
offer information on stress and health, workshops, seminars, tapes, and other resources.
These are just a few of the selections on the subject of stress to be found at your
library. So, instead of being stressed-out, come check us out!
DID YOU KNOW?
According to a survey of 150 executives nationwide done by Accountemps
and reported in "Bottom Line Personal," employees are most productive on
Tuesday. The least productive day is Friday.
THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK: "If everyone in America worked on the 99.9%
perfection principle being good enough, here's what would happen: 22,000 checks would be
deducted from the wrong bank accounts in the next hour; 20,000 prescription medicines
would be written incorrectly this year; and 2.5 million books would have the wrong cover
this year."
