Today is the 100th anniversary of the day in 1898 when
President William McKinley signed a resolution annexing Hawaii. No change in government
took place until 1900, when Congress passed an act making Hawaii an
"incorporated" territory of the US. Hawaii became a state in 1959.
Friday is Don't Step on a Bee Day (isn't every day?), and Saturday is
All American Pet Photo Day. Saturday is also the 538th day before the year 2,000. Now is
the time to do all those things you've wanted to do but put off for way too long! Take a
moment each day to do something new and enriching - especially gestures of goodwill and
brotherhood!
WHAT'S HAPPENING?
At Wednesday's 10:00 a.m. storytime, "Diane the Magicienne"
presents "A Magical Recipe for Reading" magic show on the library lawn. Magin
continues at the 3:30 p.m. storytime in a program without a professional magician.
Children who know a magic trick are invited to perform. Participants will learn magic
tricks and discover how a change bag and disappearing box work! Families are the focus at
Saturday morning's 10:00 storytime, which features a "make a family tree" craft.
BOOK TALK
Librarian Mary Beth Wright provides this week's book information. Have
you ever just been browsing for a book with no subject, no title, or no author in mind?
Then you find a book that seems to say, "Take me!" I found such a book entitled,
"Don't Worry, Make Money: Spiritual and Practical Ways to Create Abundance and More
Fun in Your Life," by Richard Carlson. This small book packs a powerful punch by
providing one hundred new strategies for living more fully and worrying less as a means of
attracting more wealth and joy in an overworked life.
The library has many other books on the subject of success in business.
For instance, Jane Quinn and Jane Bryant have written "Making the Most of Your
Money." Money management books can also be found in the young adult section. Look for
Steven Otfinoski's book, "The Kid's Guide to Money, Earning It, Saving It, Spending
It, Growing It, and Sharing It."
The library offers a variety of other resources dealing with financial
success. Check out the Internet website, www.sba.gov for information on small businesses.
If you prefer a video, try Anthony J. Cord's "The Business Plan Video Recording: Your
Road Map for Success." Using the assets of the Roswell Public Library could be the
first step in planning your business success!
DID YOU KNOW?
In honor of Don't Step On a Bee Day, here's some advice from Jill
Baren, MD, assistant professor of emergency medicine and pediatrics at the University of
Pennsylvania School of Medicine. Should your child (or anyone else) step on a bee or get
any other insect bite or sting that results in minor swelling and itching, place ice or an
instant cold pack on the bite or sting and apply an anti-itching preparation, such as
hydrocortisone. If the reaction is more severe, consult your doctor immediately.
Dr. Baren also has these suggestions for sunburn. To prevent burns,
apply sunscreen with SPF of at least 15 before you go outdoors. Sunscreen should be
reapplied after swimming or perspiring. If you do get sunburned, cool oatmeal baths and
aloe vera gel can help soothe the burn and provide relief.
THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK: "Never do anything you wouldn't be willing
to explain to God." (unknown)
