Welcome to International Volunteers Week, National
Fishing Week, and Step Parents' Week. Today is Yell "Fudge" at the Cobras in
North America Day. According to sponsors, fudge makes cobras gag, and the mere mention of
it makes them skeedaddle. So all citizens are asked to go outdoors at noon, local time,
and yell "Fudge."
Thursday is the anniversary of the day in 1784 when Marie Thible became
the first woman in history to fly in a free balloon. According to her pilot, Madame Thible
gave voice to her high spirits by "singing like a bird" as she drifted to a
height of 8,500 feet in a flight that lasted about 45 minutes.
Saturday is National Family Day, and the beginning of Take a Kid
Fishing Weekend. Saturday is also Couple Appreciation Day, a day to do something special
to reinforce and celebrate your relationship!
WHAT'S HAPPENING?
Wednesday's 10:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. storytimes feature ants, including
an opportunity for participants to make an ant hill hate. At Saturday morning's 10:00
storytime, participants will enjoy hearing stories about sailing and making a ship mobile.
Thursday, June 4, the "Books Come In All Flavors" summer
reading program begins. Young readers can get details at the prize cart in the Children's
area.
BOOK TALK
The library's Isidro Gonzalez provides this week's book information.
Next time your children complain about being bored, ask them if they would like to hear a
story. Changes are, they'll answer, "Yes," and wait with eager anticipation. Now
what do you do?
You can begin by telling them about your first pet. Tell the about
where you got it, why you gave it the name you did, what adventures you had together, and
what finally became of it. What will you do if they ask you to tell them another story?
If you want ideas on which stories to tell, as well as on how to
improve the telling, the children's section had you in mind when they developed a
bibliography for parents, day care provides, teachers, librarians, storytellers of all
ages and skill levels, and anyone else who enjoys entertaining children.
Among the 47 storytelling books listed is "Telling Your Own
Stories" by Donald Davis. The idea about the pet is just one of many included in this
dandy resource to help you remember family stories which need to be told. If you enjoy
telling stories with puppets, "Storytelling With Puppets" by Connie Chaplin will
help you choose the best puppets and techniques.
Those of you who use flannel boards need to read "Once Upon a Felt
Board" by Rozane Chadwick, who provides stories and patterns for the characters, as
well as ideas for a successful presentation. "Fold and Cut Stories" will show
you how to capture a child's imagination with nothing more than a sheet of folded paper
and a pair of scissors.
For these and many other similar books to help storytellers, visit the
children's area of your Roswell Public Library!
DID YOU KNOW?
According to Lou Marcoccio, director of research at The Gartner Group,
the year 2000 may create problems for many home electronic devices. Most severely affected
will be personal computers built before April 1997, which may have chips that will cause a
crash at midnight of December 31, 1999. Also susceptible are some high-end printers, as
well as software and electronic equipment with timers, such as fax machines and home
security systems.
If you are in doubt, contact the manufacturers. Major companies have
specialists who have analyzed their products for potential problems.
THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK:
"A problem well stated is a problem half solved." (unknown)
