Welcome to Running and Fitness Week, World Trade Week,
National Educational Bosses Week, and Buckle Up America! Week. Today is May Ray Day, which
celebrates the warm outside days the sun gives us. Take advantage of some of those rays by
also celebrating National Bike to Work Day today.
Wednesday is National Be A Millionaire Day and National Employee Health
and Fitness Day. Thursday is National Waitstaff Day, set aside for restaurant managers and
patrons to recognize and express their appreciation for the many fine and dedicated
waiters and waitresses.
Saturday is International Jazz Day, and Monday is National Tap Dance
Day. Monday is also Memorial Day, and the library will be closed.
WHAT'S HAPPENING?
Children can celebrate National Egg Month with chicken or egg stories
and by making Little Red Hen and her eggs and chicks at Wednesday's 10:00 a.m. and 3:30
p.m. storytimes. Saturday morning's 10:00 storytime features button stories and button
crafts, including whizzers and bracelets.
BOOK TALK
Children's Librarian Mary Stickford provides this week's book
information. Didn't you just love the "Merlin" TV miniseries? Want more Merlin?
The library has dozens of books for all ages about Merlin. Among them are titles for
middle grade readers, such as "The Dragon's Boy" and "Camelot" by Jane
Yolen and "Tomorrow's Magic" and "Winter of Magic's Return" by Pamela
Service.
If you love villainry and pageantry but are ready for a new mythical
setting, try the "Redwall" series by Brian jacques. He has correctly assumed
that solid plotting and good writing will appeal to all ages, including the 10-year-olds
who happily buckle down to one of his 400-page reads. If this all sounds familiar, it's
because Jacques was featured in a lengthy and highly laudatory write-up in "The Wall
Street Journal" in April. Yes, the library has them all, even the newest in the
ten-book series, "The Long Patrol."
DID YOU KNOW?
Here are a couple of interesting "factoids" from the World
Wide Web. The world's largest-diameter Ferris wheel is the Cosmoclock 21 in Yokohama,
Japan. The 60-armed wheel reaches a height of 344 feet, 6 inches and stretches 328 feet
across.
The greatest number of dominoes set up and toppled by a single
individual is 281,581 out of 320,236, by Klaus Friedrich, age 22, in Furth, Germany, on
January 27, 1984. The dominoes took 31 ten-hour days to set up and fell in 12 minutes,
57.3 seconds. The group record belongs to thirty students in the Netherlands, who set up
and toppled 1,382,101 of 1.5 million on January 2, 1988.
If you are plagued by headaches, here are a few
"do-it-yourself" headache relief tips from the New York Headache Center. Replace
fluorescent lamps with incandescent lamps. The almost imperceptible flicker of fluorescent
lights can possibly trigger a headache.
You can also visualize yourself on a hot beach, which raises your body
temperature and can ease headache pain. Holding a bag of crushed ice to the area of your
head that hurts, while soaking in a hot bath for about 30 minutes, shrinks the implamed
blood vessels that cause pain. Breathe deeply to reduce tension. Inhale for four seconds,
exhale for four seconds, and repeat 6 times.
Finally, talk with your doctor about taking 400 mg a day of chelated
magnesium. It has been shown to help relieve migraines.
THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK:
This week's quote comes from Richard M. Nixon: "Always give your best. Never get
discouraged. Never be petty. Always remember: Others may hate you, but those who hate you
don't win unless you hate them. And then you destroy yourself."
