Welcome to Be Good To Yourself Week. For the rest of the week, you can celebrate Heal Old Hurts Day, Cut Yourself Some Slack Day, Lighten UP! Day, Go For It or Live Your Dreams Day, Love Yourself or Be Your Own Best Friend Day, and Be a Fool for Love Day.

Wednesday is National Hugging Day. Since hugging is something everyone can do and since it is a healthful form of touching, this day should be spent hugging anyone who will accept a hug, especially family and friends. One of those friends might be your pet. Thursday is Answer Your Cat's Question Day. First, of course, you have to figure out what the question is!

Friday is National Handwriting Day, which is observed on the birthday of John Hancock to encourage more legible handwriting, and National Pie Day, to focus attention on pie as an American art form.

Friday is also National Spieling Day, which celebrates America's unofficial pastime - blathering. All citizens are encouraged to give lengthy lectures to their friends, families, and workmates. Speakers should take extra care to discourse in loud, grating voices and to expand upon arcane topics. Listeners should applaud no matter how ear-wrenching the spiel!

Sunday is the anniversary of the First Televised Presidential News Conference, held by John F. Kennedy in 1961. Sunday is also National Popcorn Day, as well as Super Bowl XXXII. What's more American than a super bowl of popcorn while watching the Super Bowl?

WHAT'S HAPPENING?

Dinosaurs are big fun at Wednesday's 10:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. storytimes. Saturday morning's 10:00 storytime features stories and puppetry about wolves.

BOOK TALK

Larry Holms provides this week's book discussion. Are you ready for a new and better year? So you've had it with 1997 and are ready to tackle 1998. First start up some good New Year's Resolutions.

Here is a selection of fine new books now available at the Roswell Public Library. Warning: We've unnaturally paired them for special reading delight! "Always Wear Clean Underwear and Other Ways Parents Say I Love You! And "Putting Your Past Behind You"; "Baking With Kids" and "My Turn: Women's Search for Self After the Children Leave"; "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Families" by Stephen R. Covey and "Dirty Jokes and Beer" by Drew Carey; "Sober and Staying That Way" and "Words I Wish I Wrote"; "Joan Lunden's Healthy Cooking: 100 Lowfat Tasty Recipes" and "The World's Silliest Jokes"; and "50 Ways to Sleep Better" and "Life After Suicide."

This is just a partial list of resolution helpers. For more, check the Library's Bulletin Board. Then, after you've accomplished your New Year's resolutions, you'll be much more ready for 1999, 2000, and maybe even 2001!

DID YOU KNOW?

According to information from Congressman Joe Hefley and his staff, this is where at least some of our tax dollars have gone: $34.6 million for screw worm research; $11.5 million to modernize a power plant at the Philadelphia Naval yard, which is targeted for closure; $5 million for the Tailhook Investigation; $120 million to build and operate 6 helium filled balloons in drug surveillance programs (taxpayers ended up paying $40,000 per pound of marijuana seized); and an unknown amount of money to a university researching what makes worms constipated.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK
