November has arrived, bringing Aviation History Month, Child Safety and Protection Month, Child Safety and Protection Month, International Creative Child and Adult Month, International Drum Month, National Hospice Month, Peanut Butter Lovers’ Month, Pecan Harvest Month, and (just in time for Christmas) Real Jewelry Month!

Today is the 75th anniversary of the discovery of King Tut’s Tomb, perhaps the only ancient Egyptian royal tomb to have escaped plundering by grave robbers. Egypt’s child-king, Tutankhamen became pharaoh at the age of 9 and died, probably in 1352 BC, when he was 19.

Tuesday is also Skeptics Day, and Thursday is Saxophone Day, the birth anniversary of inventor Adolphe Sax. Friday is World Community Day, which affirms a national commitment to peace and justice within the United States. Saturday is Cook Something Bold and Pungent Day, so get out your cabbage and garlic and create the heavenly, homey odor of pungently bold food!

WHAT’S HAPPENING?

Tiger Tales are featured in books and a stick puppet play at Wednesday’s 10:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. storytimes. It’s Hats Off to Hats at Saturday morning’s 10:00 storytime.

BOOK TALK

Librarian Rosie Klopfer provides this list of Thanksgiving craft and activity books for adults and children: "175 Easy-to-do Thanksgiving Crafts, by Sharon Dunn Umnik; "Best Holiday Crafts Ever," Kathy Ross; "Colonial American Crafts," Judith Hoffman Corwin; "Crafts for Thanksgiving," Kathy Ross; "Let’s Celebrate Thanksgiving," Janice Kinnealy; "My Very Own Thanksgiving," Robin West; "The Story of the First Thanksgiving," Elaine Raphael; "Thanksgiving: Activities for Primary Grades," Judy Beach; and "Thanksgiving Crafts and Cookbook," Nancy Hathaway.

In addition, the library has two books called "Thanksgiving Fun," one by Judith Hoffman Corwin and another by Beth Murray. With all of these ideas, you can have the craftiest, tastiest Thanksgiving holiday to be had!

DID YOU KNOW?

Here are some helpful tips for pet owners. You can keep dogs from barking excessively by giving them plenty of exercise and chewing toys. Also, block sources of visual stimulation, such as by closing curtains so your pet can’t see the mailman approaching or neighborhood children playing.

Dogs chew because they are bored or nervous. If you must leave a dog alone for a long time, be sure to leave some special dog toys around. Leave only two or three out per day – too many can encourage a dog to think that almost everything bite-sized is a chewing toy.

Here’s a tip for those of you with cats. Avoid using covered cat litter boxes. Covers prevent litter from scattering, but they also trap odors inside, so cats may not use the box. A spill guard, a three-to-six-inch upright frame that fits around the lip of the litter box, is a better alternative.

Finally, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, most pet turtles, snakes, and lizards carry Salmonella bacteria that don’t make the animals sick but that can cause infections in humans. Be sure to wash your hands immediately after handling reptiles and cleaning their cages. Also, keep reptiles out of kitchens, and do not use kitchen sinks to bathe them or to clean their dishes or cages. Pregnant women, children under age five, and people with weakened immune systems should avoid all contact with reptiles.
