Welcome to National Emergency Medical Services Week; International Pickle Week; National New Friends, Old Friends Week; School Support Staff Week; National Safe Boating Week; and National Backyard Games Week. Wednesday is World Turtle Day, and you can celebrate Morning Radio Wise Guy Day and National Tap Dance Day on Friday. Saturday is International Jazz Day, and Sunday is the anniversary of the day in 1930 when Richard Gurley Drew patented his adhesive tape, later manufactured by 3M as Scotch tape. The library will be closed on Monday in observance of the Memorial Day holiday. Best wishes for a safe and happy holiday from the entire staff of your Roswell Public Library. WHAT'S HAPPENING? Wednesday's 10:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. story times feature dinosaurs in stories and crafts. Saturday morning's 10:00 story time celebrates kangaroos. Saturday also marks the kick-off for the library's Summer Reading Program, which promises tons of free fun for all ages! On May 25, the library will offer a class on Intro to Internet for beginners to learn how to set up and use an e-mail account and search the web in the public computer area. The class is limited to five, so call or stop by the Reference Desk to reserve your place! BOOK TALK Librarian Lee Harback provides this week's book information. The library is adding the 2000 edition of Warman's American pottery and porcelain to its collection of antiques and collectibles price guides. This book is well illustrated in black and white and color. The trademark for each company is illustrated beside the company name along with a history of the company. The list of items is often divided by the names of various patterns when dealing with china. This is an excellent source for verifying your latest find or for researching when you plan to go antiquing. If you are more interested in some other type of collectible or antique, check our catalog to see if we have a price guide for your specialty. The guides range from Native American collectibles, to jewelry, dolls and glass. We even have Warman's flea market price guide so that you can bone up for the spring weather when flea markets abound. Our reference staff can also assist you in finding information on the Internet if you prefer to do your research online. DID YOU KNOW? If you're planning a garage sale of your own, here are some tips from Cindy Skrzynecki, author of "50 Ways to Make the Most Money Having a Garage Sale." First, signs should say only TODAY, even if the sale is on for several days. You don't want customers to postpone coming or think items were picked over the day before. It is also critical to make signs simple, big, and legible so that people can read them as they drive by. Price used items at 10% to 25% of retail value and 50% or more of retail if the items were never used. Attach a retail flyer or page featuring your item to show the bargain you are offering. Plan to set up one hour ahead of time so that you are ready for early birds. Display items between knee- and eye-level. If you're selling clothing, prop a full-length mirror nearby. Also, hang blankets to create a "dressing room." If you don't have racks, you can hang a ladder horizontally and use the rungs to display clothing on hangers. THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK: "Its when we forget ourselves that we do things that are most likely to be remembered." (unknown) JUDY ARMSTRONG, 624-7276
