Welcome to National Pancake Week, a traditional celebration surrounding Shrove (or Pancake) Tuesday (today), which recognizes the history and continuing popularity of pancakes.  This is also Telecommuter Appreciation Week and Read Me Week, during which national and local celebrities are encouraged to read in classrooms wearing readable clothing with school appropriate messages.

Wednesday is Ash Wednesday, which marks the beginning of Lent.  Wednesday is also Floral Design Day, which commemorates floral designing as an art form.  Thursday is National Pig Day, and Friday is National Salesperson’s Day, as well as Read Across America Day.

Saturday brings I Want You to Be Happy Day, a day to show care and concern for others. Saturday is also What If Cats and Dogs Had Opposable Thumbs Day, a day to be grateful that cats can’t operate the can opener and dogs aren’t able to open the refrigerator door (usually).

Sunday is Courageous Follower Day, which reminds us that it is only through active and courageous followership that leaders can be counted on to use their power wisely and well.  Sunday is also Hug a GI Day and March 4 Yourself Day, which reminds us that we get the most out of life when we get the most out of ourselves.

WHAT'S HAPPENING?

At Wednesday's 10:00 a.m. and 3:30 story times, participants will learn about pigs in stories and crafts.  Saturday morning’s 10:00 story time celebrates Youth Art Month with stories and crafts.

BOOK TALK

The library’s Bob Kerwick provides this week's book information. Most of us would agree that the most powerful political figure in the world is the President of the United States and the most important moral voice in the world is that of the Pope. It is no wonder, then, that so many books, both fictional and non-fictional, have been written about them.  We have already submitted a list of novels about presidents, so this time we try for some papal novels.

Raymond Flynn and Robin Moore have combined their talents to produce a first rate novel titled "The Accidental Pope.” It is the story of Bill Kelly, former priest, present fisherman, father of four, widower. Bill receives an unexpected visit from his old seminary pal, who is now a Cardinal in Ireland.  The purpose of the visit is to inform Bill that he has been elected Pope.  It seems that the College of Cardinals, meeting in Conclave to elect a new Pope had become hopelessly deadlocked, and Bill's name was thrown in as a sort of protest vote. To the surprise of most and the shock of a few, Bill is elected.  At times humorous, at others serious, "The Accidental Pope" is a good read.

Another recent book, "To Kill the Pope" by acclaimed correspondent, Tad Szulc, is a fictionalized account of the attempt to assassinate Pope John Paul II back in May of 1981.  It is focused on the secret investigation of the event by an agent of the Pope, an American Jesuit priest who is a former CIA case officer. Fr Tim Savage soon learns that the assassination plot had its origins much closer to home than the world suspected.

Other "Papal" novels include Malachi Martin's "Windswept House" and "Eminence" by Morris West, the author of many other novels about Popes including "The Shoes of The Fisherman."  As always, this is only a partial list and the friendly Reference librarians will be happy to help you find more.

DID YOU KNOW?

According to Harvard University’s Center for the Study of Values in Public Life, the cost of raising a child from birth to age 18 is now more than $160,000, not including college tuition!
